I will give it a try, and start by fixing my age group, but my mother had one and seems like you had to turn the top handle to the right while you held the bottom handle solid. If food or liguid was causing the lid to stick then try some really hot water around the edge or even tap on it with a rubber mallett on the opposite side clockwise and try to loosen it up. Even heating it up again might loosen whatever is sealing it. Boy, that goes back a while. Good luck.
