Cox people are really correct that everything is working from them and from there modem and doing a firmware update is really a good thing to do to correct your problem. For that firmware update you just need to download it from your routers manufacturer like Linksys , Belkin , Dlink or Netgear just go to there web site and search the model of your router so you can download the latest firmware for it.
your desktop can also go onlie using the wireless belkin router,so this router will now act as a distributor, you need to setup the router between the modem and the computer that is wired,i hope that when you say modem it is the one provided to you by your internet service provider, what you need to do is to conect the modem to the router and the router to you desktop computer, you desktop computer will go online using the wired connection to the belkin rotuer and you laptops will use the wireless connection..
Belkin G plus or equivalent. With so many computers connected to it, possibly at the same time, you need the fastest transfer speed possible from the router to the computers. Additionally, if any of the comps are incompatible with high speed transfer, the router will automatically adjust.
N.B NEVER use WEP to secure, always use WPA-PSK 2 if possible
Thank you for the clarification. I believe that 50 feet long is prone to interference that is why your computer freezes. You can try using a shorter cable to and check if the same problem occurs. This could be a problem with interference or a problem with the second computer. By trying a shorter cable, you would be able to define which is the problem.
Try connecting the sprint card to your router's internet port. You will need a usb-to-ethernet adaptor, along with a networking patch cable, to connect the sprint card to the router.
Then either connect to the router with your two computers using cables, or wireless. If using wireless, you will need wireless adaptors for each of your computers, preferrably Belkin brand to ensure compatibity.
