Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

External hard drive not recognized

Hello,

I have a My Book Essential Edition external hard drive (Western Digital, model WD5000C032). My computer is a HP Compaq dx2200 Microtower with Windows XP and Pentium 4 processor. The hard drive always showed up as an E drive. Now, it is not showing up at all. No drivers are needed for install. I went to the Western Digital website, but did not find any updates that needed to be installed. I've restarted the computer and tried plugging the drive into every USB port that I have, but none of this has worked. Fortunately, I had everything backed up on my computer's hard drive as well. Any ideas?

Same external hard drive, plugs in, lights up, does not register on computer...both are less than a year old. Dell Laptop e1405 running xp, and of course the 500GB hard drive.

The very first time this happened it would stop my laptop from loading/starting as soon as I pulled the USB plug wallah! the Laptop finished doing its thing, but now no hard drive recognition...as you can be sure I started restarted unplugged yada yada yada....

    SIGH

I would appreciate any help i can get on my WD5000. I have mine hooked up to my laptop and it starts automatically every time i start up. It has worked flawlessly until recently when i get this error come up that says "USB device not recognised" shortly after starting my laptop. After cliking the box to find out more details it lists my USB Root Hubs for which one comes up as "Unknown Device". On clicking thru furher it says that there are no drivers installed for this device. I have tried several drivers (i could be installing the wrong ones) but this has not fixed the problem. Any suggestions?

Drive worked fine with my laptop for 8 months, then it suddenly was not showing up as a drive. I tried all 2 USB 2.0 ports, all saw a disk drive on the USB prot, but said it was unformatted.

I tried it on my desk top PC - same problem - saw an unformatted drive on the USB port.

I removed the drive from the enclosure and connected an adapter cable from the SATA connections to the USB port on my desktop. It saw the drive....I transferred all but a few files...expecting the cable would work next time I powered up.

Wrong. Now once again the drive is not recognized by any manchine, opn adapter cable, or when I put it back in the enclosure.

I'm experiencing the same problem except mine is a 1T drive. I've called WD but they have been no help.

  • Anonymous Nov 22, 2008

same problem. I personally will not be buying or relying on any WD products after reading several pages of problems. How am i supposed to rely on an external hard drive to backup ALL of my files, when it seems to Sh*t the bed in under 6 months?

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2008

I recognize the problem. It was teh back-up of an old PC that has died now, so I wanted to connect my WD-essential to my laptop and the WD essential is gone. I can't find any downloadable drivers on te WD-site.

unfortunattly, this was my back-up, all my information is now lost, I'm affraid.

i also have a WD500 and it has worked perfectly for quite a while now. Out of no where it just wont show up on my computer. its shows it on my "safely remove icon" but no where else. Also before when i would disconnect it from my laptop the power light in the front would shut off, now the only way it will shut off is if i unplug it from the outlet. what should i do? i dont want to lost all my data its very valuable to me from my military experiences. someone please help?

I got a new WD Passport Elite Portable HD. It worked for a few days, then stopped being recognized in my computer, or computer management, but it does show under Safely remove hardware as "USB mass storage devise" - no drive letter is assigned. I think problem started when I moved the files that came on the harddrive (no hidden files or folders were moved). How can I move them back when the drive is not even recognized???

I recenctly bought a my book 500 gig drive and it is usb.
the firsttime I plugged the usb cable in it worksed. I had only a 40 gig ide harddrive and so I ordered an internal 500 wd hard drive to replace it. The internal 500 gig is a sata drive. first I cloned the 40 to the sata 500 and then copied the external 500 to the internal. I mover the cables to then make the internal 500 sata my boot drive. The computer would no longer show the external e\when i used the windows explorer. the device manager said it was there and working with no problem but windows did not see it.
After several experiments with diferent configurations I have concluded my motherboard wasauto configuring the external and internal 500 drives as drive 0. Since the usb was detected first and was notthe boot drive then windows assigned the internal drive as drive 0 and since the usb drive was drive 0 also it would not work. windows ignored it. my solution was to return the ide as the boot drive and plug the sata into a slave port. with that configuration both drive are seen and work normally. It took me several days to find this arrangement. so since my sata ports are auto configure and the external has a sata connection i will install an esata port adapter and try to hook it up as a slave sata drive so i cab\n use my internal 500 sata drive as my boot drive.
sorry this was so long but it is my solution to what others may be facing.

Since I last posted, I've called Western Digital a support person had me try a couple things, but we concluded the drive has become bad. I brought it in to my office and tried it as well, but get the same result -- the clicking, but no recognition on the computer. Again, thanks for trying, but it looks like the drive is dead.

What a coincident, so this external HDD has problems for a lot of people. I have tried my one external on a fairly new PC and it wasn't able to recognize the external on Windows Vista OS, however, I gave my laptop a try and still the same problem occurred.

The comment above, shows gggdei opened the case, removed the jumper to be on a "Single or Master". Has anyone else confirm if this actually works? First of all, what is a jumper, what does it look like, and how do we switch it to "Single or Master?

Many thanks in avdance

I stupidly reformatted my computer without disconnecting my external hard drive, and ended up formatting it, so lost all my backed up data. I purchased Data Doctor Recovery NTFS and even though the drive is not recognized by my computer, was able to recover all the data on my external drive. This might work for some of you who have lost data. The program was $70 online. I'm running a 7 year old Dell Dimension 8200 with XP home edition. Now if I could just figure out how to get the external drive back on line...?

I had a similar problem w/ a Western Digital My Book 500G. Initially it worked so I transferred a lot of files to it. Then I started having problems when booting my Gateway desktop which is about five years old. The computer would hang up during the boot cycle unless I disconnected the USB cable. I kept trying to force the computer to try to recognize the drive while booting up. Finally, the computer didn't recognize the external drive at all. The unit was still in warranty so WD replaced it but I lost all my files. The replacement seemed to work OK so I loaded it up w/ files but before long, I had the same problem and once again, lost all my data. This time the drive was out of warranty so all I had was a "paper weight." I figured I had nothing to lose by taking apart the unit (BTW, it is difficult to open it up). I was able to get the hard drive out and tried to install it as an internal drive on my computer but the serial cables didn't match - I may need to find some sort of adapter cable. Meantime, I bought another WD 500G in hopes of swapping out parts to at least get the data off the original hard drive. As I mentioned, the case is hard to open so I have not yet been able to open the new one - I don't want to end up damaging the case. Still working on it. I have a Dell laptop which is about two years old and the new WD 500G has had not problem on that computer. I bought a Seagate 750G external drive for the Gateway desktop and have the same problems WRT the computer hanging up during the boot cycle. I have to disconnect the USB cable while booting the computer and then reconnect it once the computer is up and running. Therefore, I have concluded that the problem lies w/ my computer. Both computers are using Windows XP.

Wait, you bought one WD and it failed, then *bought another* which also failed? Why would you buy another WD?

If you dropped the drive, you can send it to http://techrxgb.com and they can try to "un stick" the damage on the drive. It certainly will cost you a few dollars, but it's possible your data is okay.

Either the drive or the case has gone bad, if its the case you can get external case from new egg for about 20 bucks and put the drive in that case to continue using it.
