Question about Hobart Welders 500545 Champion Elite 11000 Watt Generator225 Amp AC 210 Amp DC Stick Welder With 23 HP Subaru 4Cycle Engine

1 Answer

I have a B&S 5HP engine. i was not gettting any spark with a new plug. So I took the flywheel off to check the points and lost the key. Dumb me. There is a note on the point cover that says do not use a steel key. What kind of key should I buy? Do they make aluminum? Are they strong enough? Why do they require this? Also what is the gap for the magnetic pickup? Thank you. Steve

Aluminum key is soft enough to shear but not damage the slot on crank shaft or flywheel.

No fire to spark plug

well you didnt mention who made the engine so i cant go into to detail too much, but by the parts you describe id say you have a small engine of less than 8 hp there is one thing about these that not many know of theres points located under the flywheel , also it's critical that flywheel is remounted in exactly the same posision (timing) or it will spark but not run , there is a tiny aluminum key that is made soft on purpose to hold flywheel to shaft

Tecumseh will not start after replacing flywheel key. engine has good spark and is getting fuel

check compression. You have two parts of the engines operation triangle! The only thing left if timing is correct is compression.

Are you sure you got the right flywheel key? Some engines have stepped keys. Althought you would probably have backfire issues if the timing was off that much.

Get compression numbers! Good luck and be careful!

Starting trouble

if it's on a pushmower you will have to remove cowling to expose top of crank & flywheel & confirm the key holding the flywheel in place has not sheared. common issue after abrupt stop of blade. If carb problem would need more details on type of briggs. did you check for spark? if you have gas check to make sure float is not stuck closed. sometimes with gum buil up the needle sticks & stops gas flow. i have tapped slightly & been lucky to free but more often have to take apart & clean

Briggs & stratton 5hp motor will not start

Check the flywheel key, it may have sheared. If the key shears it will throw timing way off. This would cause a backfire or "pop". Start there and let me know, Daniel

Have an older tiller w/a 5hp briggs motor, no spark, had to repair inside wire going to coil, still no fire, are there points inside flywheel i should check & does flywheel pull off

First check continuity of coil to ensure there are no breaks .If there is a wire heading in under the flywheel, it is probably going to the points. Check coil is grounded properly.
The points are normally behind the flywheel which you will have to remove using a pullers. The nut holding the flywheel on to the shaft normally loosens in the same direction as the flywheel rotates but if there is any shaft thread exposed above the nut, check the threads to confirm this.
The capacitor near the points may be shorted, disconnect it to check this with a continuity tester.

Mastercarft gas lawn mower

Take the unit outdoors. BE SAFE!
Remove the spark plug and pull the rope SLOWLY to expell any excess fuel from a possible flooded condition.

If no fuel, leave the spark plug out and check for bent blade and/or crankshaft. If bent, it is likely the flywheel key is sheared and ignition timing has been affected. If you feel the need for a manual to perform this task then perhaps this is a job for a qualified repair shop.
No offense intended what-so-ever!

If crankshaft is bent, ALL engine manufacturers recommend replacement by an Authorized Service Center.

Hope this helps.

No spark

You will need to remove the recoil cover, flywheel, and the cover over the points and condensor. Buy a new set of points and condensor and install them. Turn the engine over until it opens the points up and set them at .020 in. with a feeler guage. Re-assemble and make sure you tighten the flywheel tight enough or it will shear off the flywheel key. Also, before removing the flywheel check the gap between the magnet on the flywheel and the coil that the plug wire comes from. Also, make sure nothing is grounded out. (wire from points to coil).

Good luck,

Chipper won't start

what engine do you have im guessing a briggs & stratton was it running previously or sitting awhile it can be a few things the flywheel key could be sheered or the points are bad or the flywheel & coil are rusted check flywheel & coil to see if rusted if so take coil off mild sand paper like 80 grit i beleave clean both to get the right gap between flywheel & coil turn the flywheel alittle bit so the magnets won't touch coil or if coil still of set flywheel to where it will touch magnets fat peice of sand paper not folded but flat sand paper about .020 gap between magnet & coil if you place sand paper against the flywheel magnet then set coil against sand paper & magnet that should give you 0.020 gap & it should start if not e-mail me i will guide you through everything to get it started
