Question about Apple Computers & Internet

Problem with audio recording on E-Mac with Mac OS X ver 10 I have a SM-58 recording mic hooked up to an Icicle (audio interface). The Icicle didn't come with any software because it is just a plug-in and use product. At first it worked just fine. Recently, I have been deleting some applications and files on my Mac OS version 10.4.10 to free up some space. And now the Iclicle won't show up under system preferences where as before everything was working just fine. Is there anything that I could have deleted that would cause my Iclicle not to be recognized at all by the Mac? And if so, how can I put it back - I have the original OS disks, but don't want to do a new OS install. Any suggestions?

    System is an E-Mac.

Disks are Mac OS X 10.4.10

System on computer says it has OS X 10.4.11

System will not reboot on disks (by holding down "c"), instead it comes up with a kernel error and unintelligible system dump. Tried multiple times.

Tried booting with "D" to check on hardware, it just reboots but does nothing. Does not recognize system disk.

But does recognize system disk (to do new install) when disk is put in after system has booted.

    Thank you Lyz.

Okay, it's my son's Mac. I use PCs. All I get with the link is a text file. Nothing to install, what am I supposed to do with it on the mac? All I have is a file of text within the browser.

    Excuse my Mac ignorance.

    Thanks, Kelvin

Yes, that is how it works when it was working. It stopped showing up so could not be selected.

The Icicle was malfunctioning ... GuitarCenter replaced it. New one shows up as it should.

    Thanks, Kelvin

You can download the drivers and software free on the web. The drivers are what lets the device sync with the pc. If you deleted the software files, then they too will have to be updated or reinstalled.

Hi,

You should find the Icicle option mentioned below:

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Select the Icicle or whatever it's called in the panel.

Thanks and regards

Honest I am not very familiar with Mac and your Music system, but I have at least an idea on how to repair a mac system. I've got a tutorial for you, you can simply follow the instructions on the tutorial if you have the original disks. This is called Repairing Disk Error, and will restore all the missing files of the machine.
(click here), open the link, save the file [it's a pdf file] and follow the instructions. If the link doesn't start automatic download, then click the Save button (an icon looks like a floppy drive) on the left corner of the page after the page is opened.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

No output signal for vocalist live 3

If the mic is a low Z- mic, that might be the issue. Check the mic straight into the sound card of the mac and see if it works or if it is shorted. Is there a switchon the mic? it may be dirty.

I have set-up M-Audio microphone recently but I can't seem to figure out HOW to begin using it. I've tried every drop down and clicked every recording button while I was using the software. . . is there...

Without knowing your setup or the mic model, my guess is that you need to run a phantom power supply to the mic to get it to function. This is done either by using an outboard analog mixing console or mic preamp with a phantom power switch, or using an inline phantom power supply. The microphone plugs into the mixer or mic pre with the phantom turned on, and then into your DAW system.
The phantom power works with condensor microphones like the one you have. It sends a 48v signal to the microphone element, which in turn energizes the element and makes it function. Dynamic mics, like a Shure SM 58 for example, do not need the phantom power and will even ignore it if run on a phantom powered channel. condensor mics however must have it to function, otherwise there will not be any sound. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Son wants to buy CAD GXL2200sp studio microphone package and wants to plug into laptop. Will that work?

Hi,
for purposes of recording quality, I would recomend getting and external sound card. M-audio make a good range. You would need to have a +48v phantom power supply for this unit to work. The sound card you buy should have this. A Pc or laptop won't

I know that the m-audio nova is a studio recording microphone , but i would like to know why it is not recommended for stage use ?

I would guess that the mic is a condensor type. These mics are much more sensitive to transients, and they tend to pick up a lot of ambient sound around them. In contrast, dynamic mics, such as the Shure SM 58 have become the standard live mic because their pickup pattern and response tend to be concentrated close to the singer, thus rejecting the ambient noise that condensors pick up. The live sound environment is very different acoustically than the controlled studio environment, and therefore, mics are chosen to accommodate the different acoustics.
