Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

Kenmore dryer quit running. I don't hear the timer moving and motor is not moving the tub. I've checked the circuit breakers and they are not tripped. I've even reset them. I'm about to check the receptacle for power to make sure it is not a bad receptacle. I suspect a bad timer.

Dyer will not dry

The CMT switch is the centrifugal motor switch mounted on the dryer motor. It has spring loaded weights that retract it back into the open circuit position between Number 1 and number 2 on either end of the quick connect. These 2 are thick red wires and go to the heater. If the motor is not running the heat will not come on To check the cent switch manuall move it by sliding the black disc on the shaft Then check between the 2 ends to see if you have continuity. The chances of the cent switch being faulty are slim and none. The motor circuit is on 120 volts because the motor is a 120 volt one. Only the heater needs 240 volts. So if one side of the breaker is bad or tripped you might not get any heat. make sure you got 240 between L-1 and L-2. Next thing to check (with machine unplugged) is the fat red wire on the timer. Remove it and check from that leg and any other leg on the timer. If you cannot get a reading between that terminal and any other terminal on the timer and you moved it around the dial to do the check then you have a bad timer.

Kenmore Dryer Model #68202 just quit working. Set

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Things that will cause a dryer to just up and stop are:

1. Door switch
2. Motor Switch
3. Belt switch

The first thing to check is the door...

a. Verify the door remains closed and that if you gently tug on the door that it does NOT make the door switch click. Things like the switch actuation post get worn and clothes being dried press against the door and can cause the dryer to stop.

The second thing to check is the drum.

a. Reach inside the dryer and push the drum in either direction. If it moves easily with little resistance (Belt not turning the motor as drum is moved) then the belt has broken and the belt saftey switch has been activated causing the dryer to appear dead in all aspects.

The last thing that can cause it to just stop is a failure of the motor or motor switch. (Least suspects at this time)

Also go to the main Circuit breaker panel and physically turn off the dryer 30A Circuit breakers by pushing them against the off position and then back to the on position. This resets the breaker completely

You did not mention the age of this Dryer yet at this time I suspect a broken belt has tripped the belt safety switch.

Thanks for using FixYa!

well without a complete accurate model # i can only generalize solutions..
the motor could have gone bad, the door switch could be bad, the timer itself may have gone bad, and on some electric dryers the thermal fuse could also be bad as it is wired into the motor run circuit..
now of course it could be something as simple as a blown breaker that is not strong enough to cause the other lever to trip out so you don't notice it so easily..
best of luck,
hope this helps,

Dryer will not come on at all. working fine on last load

check house fuse/circuit breaker
door switch
if an electric dryer the thermal fuse as they are often wired into the motor run circuit
check for power to the motor in start and run circuit, if present motors spent.
if not present trace back to timer and verify timer is sending power, if not timers spent.
more likely circuit breaker, door switch or thermal fuse if electric dryer..
hope this helps,
best of luck,

Kenmore dryer stop working after a lightening storm. checked breakers appears ok, but when you push start switch after setting timer i hear humming noise coming from timer but dryer will not come on.

It is very possible the humming is not comming from the timer, but the motor. check the capacitor on the motor. it should be a 5 or 8 microfarad cap .replace it. Dont try and run motor like that anymore untill it is checked.

Dryer will not start

It is possible that the door switch is defective. Switch is on inside of front panel. If so you have to dismantle dryer to remove switch. This switch will prevent motor from starting. Is timer running? You should be able to hear small motor running near timer. If not, make sure 240 volt breaker is not tripped. Dryer motor and timer only run on 120 volts and heating element uses 240 volts. So, if one side of 240 volt circuit is dead it may be the side of the circuit that powers motor. Try flipping breaker off and on again. If possible, check circuit with volt meter ONLY if you know how to. If not, get a tech to check out.

Won't heat, won't advance on auto, won't shut off on timed. air only fine

I suspect you have a timer motor problem. My experience has been in most cases you cannot buy just the timer moter, you need to purchase the entire costly expense. If you can get your ear near the timer while running, first listen to hear the motor. Usually when the motor is going to quit, it becomes fairly noisy. In any case, the timer should advance,

Kenmore 22956 top loader quit running after agite cycle

If the timer cycles your lid switch is ok.
most likely: motor Switch (on Motor), condenser next to motor, motor itself, or wiring going from the time to the switch,

It is probably cost efficient to replace the unit rather than trowing parts at it .
