Problem for HP Printers

I have a HP Photsmart
I have a HP Photsmart C4200 All in one printer/scanner only 2 months old. I replaced a standard 74 black ink cartridge with a 74XL carefully following all instructions covered in the instruction book but I keep getting the message saying,"Carriage Jam, clear carriage jam. press O.K.".Close inspection of the carriage and cartridge holder with a flashlight,there appears nothing in the way to block the carriage from returning to the left side of the carriage rails. I even put back the former 74 black cartridge and still get the same message. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
