You either have a fault in the head unit, connection to the transducer, broken wire in the transducer cable, or a faulty transducer.

My Garmin depth finder/gps combo is giving me a false depth reading, like way way outta sack, not a foot or two. It came as an extra on a boat I purchased and elsewise seems ok,just inaccurate depth. Is it...

YOUR TRANSDUCER MAY BE SET FOR HORIZONTAL MODE...MEANING FROM BANK TO BOAT, NOT DEPTH...CHECK THE TRANSDUCER TO MAKE SURE, IT IS AIMING DOWN, NOT OUT...OTHERWISE YOU'LL NEED TO CHECK YOUR MODE SETTINGS IN YOUR MENU.

YOU CAN ALSO DO A TEST ON YOUR TRANSDUCER, BY SCREWING IT ONTO A BROOM STICK ...ADJUST THE TRANSDUCER DOWN, CHECK YOUR SETTINGS ON THE SCREEN, THEN DO A SIDE TEST WITH THE TRANSDUCER TILTED SIDEWAYS TOWARDS THE BANK AND CHECK YOUR SCREEN!

THEY CAN BE TRICKY...AND ARE VERY SENSITIVE, BUT ONCE YOU FIGURE OUT, HOW YOU WANT TO USE IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT!

HOPE THIS HELPS!

I have a Garmin 182c with a garmin GSD20 sounder unit ,if my transducer wire is cut or nicked would it cause the unit to unit to read " sonar turned off" ?

If you nicked it good enough yes it can. If the receiver doesn't detect the transducer, a digital message on the display will indicate this.

I turn my power source on and my screen flashes like it's not reading anything from my transducer but the transducer is new.

Has this unit worked in the past, or are the transducer and the unit itself new? Is this a Lowrance LMS-240 as indicated before your question?

Please let me know and I can help you out here.

Thanks, just reply here,
Tim

My fishfinder lowrance x85 the screen is fading is there any way to tell if it is the unit or the transducer and is there another uniy yhat I can use with that transducer so I won;t have to rewire it...

It is not the transducer. the transducer just provides the sonar reading back to the display. The issue is with the display head unit. Have you tried to adjust the contrast for the fading? Does the screen disappear after awhile? Is the head unit mounted close to other navigation equipment, such as a Compass that may cause interference?

False fish readings

False fish readings are commonly caused by electrical interference such as alternator noise, and by air bubbles flowing across transducer.

For starters make sure your fishfinder is on an independent circuit and not on one powered by your ignition switch. In other words, you should be able to turn your fishfinder on, even though the engine is turned off. Ideally the fishfinder should be wired directly to the battery with an in line fuse.

Try running the boat at a speed slightly higher than trolling speed, then kill the engine, as the boat slows down to trolling speed do you still see false echos? If yes then the problem probably lies with how the transducer is mounted, or where it is located on the hull.

If you don't see the false echos when the engine is off, it may be necessary to reroute the transducer cable to keep it away from the boat's ignition wires. You can get transducer extension cables if necessary. Also there are filters that you can buy that suppress alternator noise buy attaching between the battery and the engine.

Another common cause of false echos from electrical interference is a transducer cable that has been cut and spliced.

I hope this information helps. Please reply if you have any questions about my response.

Log and trip function not registering

It is unlikely the problem is in the A65 screen.....most likely it is an issue with the paddlewheel itself, its circuit in the depth/speed transducer, or least likely, in the DSM25 sounder module.

Both the log and the trip functiions are read from the paddle-wheel sensor of the connected DSM25 sounder module and transducer.

1. Make sure you have a DSM25 sounder module and transducer with a paddle wheel (the A65 is available without the DSM25 option.)

Double check the connections between the DSM25 and the A65, as well as the transducer connection to the A65. There is an indicator light on the DSM25 to confirm it is on.

2. Make sure the paddle wheel turns freely. They tend to get fouled easily with debris and growth.

3. Make sure the A65 is giving to a reading for SPEED when underway or when having a buddy spin the paddlewheel by hand. Do not confuse SPEED with SOG. SPEED is from the paddlewheel.....SOG (Speed over ground) comes from your GPS sensor and is not used by A65 for log or trip purposes.

If you get npo speed reading at all the paddle wheel may be defective or the depth/speed transducer may be defective. See your dealer about a replacement.
