4-prong to 3-prong Power Cord Conversion.

On a 4-prong power cord you have 2 hot wires, one neutral wire, and one ground wire. On a three prong cord, you have 2 hot wires and one neutral/ground wire. The difference is the on four prong the neutral wire goes to electrical neutral bus in the breaker panel and the ground wire goes to the ground bus in the breaker panel. Since the neutral and ground buses, although separate, both go to physical ground, on a three-wire setup, you are just putting the neutral and ground wire together, Most dryers actually have a place at the pigtail connection to do just that.

Can u help me please we're do the brown grey and white with pink line wires go

Four-Wire: Green

The green wire is the ground wire, and it is the difference between a three-wire and a four-wire cord. (In the three-wire system, the ground wire and the neutral wire are the same.) The green wire connects to the dryer frame. Look at the cord-connection terminals on the back of the dryer. Very close by, you should see a screw sticking out of the metal panel. It will be labeled "external ground connector" or something similar. Connect the green wire to that screw.

Four-Wire: Black

Most appliances in your house run on 120 volts of electricity, some on 240 volts. The dryer needs both--240 volts to run the drum and heating element, and 120 volts to run the timer, thermostat and other components. For this reason, the dryer cord has two live or "hot" wires--one black, one red--rather than a single hot wire. The dryer draws 120 volts from each hot wire to get the 240 volts it needs for the heavy work, then pairs one hot wire with the neutral wire for the 120 volts to run the smaller functions. Look again at the connection terminals on the back of the dryer. There should be three screws in a horizontal row. Connect the black hot wire to the terminal on the left.

Four-Wire: Red

Connect the other hot wire, the red wire, to the terminal on the right. (In truth, you could connect either hot wire to either hot terminal, but it's standard procedure to put the black on the left and the red on the right, so do so.)

Four-Wire: White

The white is the neutral wire, and it connects to the center terminal. There may be a metal strap attached to this terminal. That's a ground strap. When a three-wire cord is attached, it serves the same function as the ground screw mentioned above.

Three-Wire: Gray

If you have a three-wire cord, then all three wires will be gray. They're arranged side-by-side with the hot wires on the outside and the neutral wire in the middle. Attach the hot wires to the left and right terminals and the neutral wire to the center terminal. Make sure the ground strap is attached to the center terminal.

I have used tedx640eq0 whirlpool dryer. Just moved into a new apartment that had a 3 prong plug. I connected the 2 hot's and put the ground on one of the ground terminals at the new 4 prong socket that I...

The reason for the 4-wire plug/socket system is that in the older 3-wire units, cabinet 'ground' was actually 'neutral' carrying current for the 115 volt parts of the dryer, while the two 'hots' were supplying 230 volt power for the heater and motor. This allowed a voltage difference between the dryer cabinet and true ground. How did you wire 3-wires (coming from the apartment electrical panel) into the 4-wire dryer socket? Dryer cabinet ground should go to true ground at the electrical panel, and dryer neutral should go to electrical panel neutral. Did Whirlpool violate the separation of 'neutral' and 'ground' when the machine was made (did the timer neutral connection go to cabinet ground instead of machine neutral or is the timer motor stuck)? Your dilemma would be answered by having the apartment owner hire a licensed electrician to upgrade the dryer service to 4-wire specifications. The ground to neutral connection you mentioned may make it work, but you will wind up with the 'hot' cabinet condition that the 4-wire setup was supposed to alleviate. Hope some of this helps!

The dryer has a four prong male plug and the outlet is a three prong female - which do I change? the dryer cord is the easiest, but how do I connect the leads?

4 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS(RED&BLACK) 1 NEUTRAL(WHITE) 1 GROUND(GREEN). 3 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS&1 NEUTRAL. YOU MUST USE 2 HOTS & 1 NEUTRAL ON A 3 WIRE PLUG. THE GROUND WIRE(GREEN) WHICH IS HOOKED TO FRAME OF THE DRYER IS NOT USED ON OLDER 3 WIRE PLUGS. IT IS AN ADDITIONAL SAFTEY GROUND ON NEWER MODEL 4 WIRE PLUGS.

I'm hooking a 50 amp plug to this dryer , i have 4 wires the old 1 has 3 my colors are black, red, white, and green from left to right which way do they go on

Hello. I can assist you. first of all, please do not use a 50 amp plug on a dryer. A dryer requires a 30 amp plug. The plug you are using is for an electric range or oven. The black and the red wires are both hot wires. The white is neutral and the green is ground. read the device it will say LINE and LINE for the hot wires and neutral for neutral. It should have a green screw on it for your ground [green].

We have moved and the three prong cord now needs to be four prong

Ok here is how to hook up looking at dryer. Left brass screw is hot put red or black wire on. Center screw silver is neutral put white wire on. Right brass is also hot put the red or black wire on which one you have left. The green you ground to the dryer body or you can put with the white wire.

The reason why you have to hot wires is that it is a 240 volt dryer. Each hot wire caries 120 volts. The hot wires are the red and black. The white is a neutral witch is also a ground

I hope this helps. If you have any questions please ask before you rate.

Good Luck And Thank You for the post

In a three wire system you have 2 hot wires (black and red) and a neutral (white). the ground is connected to the neutral at the dryer. In a 4 wire system you have the 2 hot wires, neutral, and a ground. (green). The ground is connected with the neutral at the circuit panel. The hot wires at the dryer should be on the outside scres, the neutral should be in the center and the ground should be under the green screw. *****. .

4 wire to 3 wire dryer cord

usually the grounding strap is still on the machine after the installation of a four prong cord (they just bend it out of the way), if not you can use a wire to connect the neutral to the case or just buy a ground strap when you buy the cord.    (hot wire 110v) neutral wire (hot wire 110v) neutral wire is always in the middle. both on the cord and on the machine

220v dryer

If this is for the standard USA electrical distribution, the power cord connections to the terminal in the back of the dryer are as follows:

3-PRONG:

RED (HOT) - to the RED wire at the terminal
BLACK (HOT) - to the BLACK wire at the terminal
WHITE (NEUTRAL) - to the WHITE wire at the terminal (this is the center lug on the terminal).

NOTE: Some dryer cords may not be color coded. Just ensure the the center wire goes to the center terminal (neutral) of the terminal board. The other two wires are HOT and it does not matter how they connect as long as they go to the two outer lugs on either side of the Neutral.

4-PRONG:

RED (HOT) - to the RED wire at the terminal
BLACK (HOT) - to the BLACK wire at the terminal
WHITE (NEUTRAL) - to the WHITE wire at the terminal (this is the center lug on the terminal).
GREEN (GROUND) - to the equipment chassis. (this is usually a separate lug that grounds this wire to the equipment cabinet or frame.)

I hope this helps you. Please post back if you have any further questions.
