Question about kawasaki Full Suspension Mountain Bike Men

1 Answer

I have an 02 vulcan nomad 1500 fi w/ 28k miles and just recently changed the clutch spring due to gear slipping, worked great. After riding about a week and putting on at least 350 miles, on my way home from a friends it was suddenly very hard shifting up. Shifting gears down seemed ok but going back up was wierd, any thoughts out there? Are cables a suspect? The adjustment is on #1 as it has been since the day I got it.

Sure, cables always start stretching just before they snap, as one strand at time breaks and unravels.
But is could also be a lack of oil in the transmission, friction material coming loose from previous slippage and binding, etc.
You say the adjustment is ok, but how much freeplay does it have?

hey kirk, I never lost a drop when gasket, bolts and frame went back together and my window shows good capacity. I don't know what you mean by freeplay, I just never had any issues with clutch or cables and for it to just suddenly start to shift that hard didn't give me any feel hints at all.

Since cables are multi-strand, when one strand after another breaks, they just start to stretch before they go completely. And as they get longer and longer, you get more and more free play. Which is looseness in the clutch lever, before you feel resistance. And too much free play will always make shifting hard, because the discs are still rubbing a little.

2001 kawsaki 1500 vulcan nomad gets hot and jumps from 1st to 3rd back to neutral

Hi, Leonard and the usual suspects are:
1. Shifter pawl improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly adjusted or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts/dogs badly worn or rounded.
4. Shifter forks bent.
5. Damaged gears.

Need radator for kawasaki vn 1500 classic tourer 2001 is the driffter the same radator as the vn 1500 classic plz hellllllllllllp

TO ALL VN1500 OWNERS....This once happen to me,
I went to the garage to start the bike "Nothing ""The first thing is the lights are bright but no turning over,Next you think the solenoid is kaput but the answer was very simple and the fix takes 30 seconds..
Do not take the bike to bits looking for other problems and look at the clutch leaver and you will see some wires going into a plastic shroud going into the switch in the clutch leaver, Make sure this has not popped out if its connection as it some times may do after a few years due to constant turning on the handlebars,
When this is not connected you will have a bike that will not fire up but comes alive and you will hear a clicking noise but this is from the engine carb area and every function of the bike will work but it will not turn over, Worth looking at and saves sixteen quid for a starter unit you never needed.

Recently purchased a '97 Vulcan 1500 C. Had 11,730 miles on it. After riding about 1,000 miles, the clutch is begining to slip when cold. Seems ok after riding for about an hour. It also clunks, or grinds...

I don't think your clutch is bad, if it doesn't slip when hot. I would be blaming the pull on the lever not enough, or the gears are worn in the tranny. You can adjust the lever and you can try bleeding off the clutch, The engine oil usually cools the clutch, I'm not sure where your filter is, mine is underneath like a car. My tranny clunks and grinds when revving too much, have to wait for the revs to go down before shifting into first. It used to slip on hot days. Hasn't done it but a couple times. I never took out the clutch basket, but it seems fairly easy. If the oil change doesn't do it, and the bleeding of the slave, I would have to dig deeper into complaints about your bike, before I blame the clutch. You might not have to touch it, but you might be looking at something else. Check it out.

sounds like the gear selector plate plunger is worn or needs a new spring. on most engines a hollow screw @ 3/4" is accessible from under gear box, take it out and stretch the spring and retry to eliminate possibility.

Clutch slipping while cold, when warm/hot, it operates great.

I have a 2000 Vulcan Nomad FI & had a very similar problem. In fact, it's a very common problem with these bikes. I fixed it by replacing the Clutch Spring. (As Described here: http://www.gadgetjq.com/clutch_spring_replacement.htm

It cost me $40 and 3 hours of time with an impact wrench.

Clutch/gearbox problem

its not the clutch but the clutch limiter spring, it gets worn in the center, this is a 1-1/2 hour job to replace and 45 -60 dollars in parts. if you email me at ellentoncustomz@yahoo.com i can walk you through this or give you another site that gives step by step instructions with pictures. also if you attempt this yourself or if a shop does it tell them to use the meanstreak spring it is stronger.
