Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

1 Answer

My pool filtering system has been installed for 5 years and has worked well. It has a Jacuzzi 1.5hp pump and a Hayward s244t filter with heater and a salt generator. I have never replaced the sand. It has had a problem 2 times in the past week at startup in the morning. It appears there is blockage in the filter preventing flow through it because when I open the pump backet, it is pressurized. If I then backflush or rinse the filter, everything appears to work fine. Then I switch it back to normal filter operation and it works ok. I have a timer on the filter and the problem only occurs first in the morning when the timer starts it. Any ideas?

This problem is intermittent and does not fail every morning. We have not messed with the sand in 5 years. The problem is not the method that I backflush and rinse. It has been working the same way for years and I haven't changed anything. It has done to me twice... Today it worked fine! It seems like there is pressure in the filter system when it starts up. Stil stuck!

Assuming you don't have too much sand in it or something like that, because it used to work fine, my first guess would be that you are not setting the rinse cycle after the back flush, and the same dirt is coming right back into the filter.

{ ... RINSE—After backwashing, with pump off, set valve to
RINSE. Start pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute.
This ensures that all dirty water from backwashing is
rinsed out of the filter to waste, preventing possible return
to the pool. Stop pump, set valve to FILTER, and start
pump for normal filtering ... }

Look at the sight glass during each back flush, and see if there really is dirt. If so, then then either the pool is extremely dirty or you are cycling the same dirt over and over.

The manual comments about not letting the sand get into either of the two pipes, or being over fill, (it says sand should be below 6 inches from the top).
But it could be you have something growing in the sand, or the sand could be getting finer from age fractures. I would suggest changing the sand. Can't hurt or be expensive. But follow the procedure in the manual, by covering the openings when you do it.
A last thought would be if a directional valve was starting to stick, and that was building up pressure, but I don't know what it looks like well enough to say about that.

Hayward pro series s244 im getting large amounts of sand in pool and the system is drawing lots of air what could be wrong

Either broken lateral drain assembly or the manifold.

If fairly new filter, it could be that you have overfilled the amount of sand, as it is too close to the bottom of the variable position Multiport filter valve.

How do I make sure I reassemble my Hayward sp0714t

Hi This is John the Hayward tech. I have attached a link to the manual for the 2244T. Not sure if you took the valve apart or have taken the valve off the filter and just need to put it back on. Let me know if the manual helps http://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/manuals/ProSeries-S180T-S210T-S220T-S244T.pdf

If the tank is cracked, you most certainly need to replace the whole thing. This should be covered under warranty and the local Hayward Warranty pool guy should be able to take care of this for you. Call one of the pool supply stores in your area and they should be able to direct you to the local warranty person.

I have an Hayward Pro Series S244T filter and I have had problems with sand blowing back into pool - the filter is only 2 years old

When sand returns to the pool, there is a hole in either the media or the sieve that is supposed to keep the sand in the filter.
All of the sand must come out of the filter, the sieve at the bottom (outlet of the filter) must be removed and any broken segments must be replaced.
The sand is then returned.

We have a Hayward Pro Series sand filter S244T. It was installed 3 years ago. There is no indication of flow through the glass bulb on the back of the valve when the valve is in normal operating...

The sightglass is designed for backwash only, it allows you to see the degree of clarity in the effluent water. There should not be flow through the sightglass when the filter is in normal operation. Sometimes the pump will be alot louder when you backwash because there is alot less back pressure and it sometimes causes pump cavitation. The pump should quiet down when in normal filter mode. If not, there may be problems with the bearings and/or cavitation.

1/2hp Hayward Pump for existing inground pool

you will be fine with the 1/2hp. The Hayward will move quite a bit of water as well. It may not move as much water as the 3/4hp but it's very close and the 1/2hp will cost a little less to operate so if anything, you may just have to run it for one additional hour per day to compensate. You will be surprised how much water a 1/2hp will move. The only issue with smaller pumps is if you have pop-up cleaner heads or a suction driven automatic cleaner such as a kreepy krauly, however, if a 3/4hp will run it, a 1/2hp will run it as well. You can install a larger motor on the super pump but it will not move more water unless you upgrade the impeller as well. Just make sure you don't use a bigger impeller than what the motor is rated for because it will strain the motor and cause it to overheat. Hope this helps.
