It might have a built in thermostat that will light the heater when room temp falls below a certain temp. It should then relight and warm things back up. As long as the pilot stays lit it should work just fine.
One, ensure that the flame is entirely one color blue, no light blue in the center, no orange or yellow. If you replaced the thermocouple yourself, ensure you connected it to the gas valve and/or ensure that the connection to the gas valve is tight. If it is a new thermocouple you may have a gas valve issue, this is uncommon and rare. However, the valve may not be receiving the signal from the thermocouple. If the color of the flame is incorrect, turn fireplace off, and clean out the pilot tube and then relight. If none of this works, call your local trained professional. Remember you are dealing with gas, being cheap can put you in danger.
That's normal. It's the correct way to allow the the Thermocouple and/or Thermopile to fully heat up. If you have been turning the pilot light OFF after each use and then relighting it when you want to use the heater, that's really not necessary. Leaving the pilot lit during the heating season is a better way to go. If you think you're saying gas by turning the pilot light OFF and then relighting it again, when you want heat, you're really not saving a significant amount of gas or money. The pilot burning continuously, uses very little gas.
The reason this is happening is that the overload switch, which is part of the safety features has gone bad. That's why the burner will only light with the glass off. The orange color of the flame from the pilot flame is normal for propane.
Unfortunately, this is not a DIY fix. If you can find a qualified service technician, that's the best way to go. As, Heat-n-Glow fireplaces are a basic, builder box line. And as such, have some quirks that other, more expensive gas fireplaces don't have.

Pilot light stays lit various times, sometimes for several days then other times for a few minutes. Lights best when temp outside is below freezing. Pilot flame appears to receive too much air. How do you adjust the pilot flame? Is this done using two screws marked A & E? Do you have suggestions?
Thanks,
Ed
First, turn the wall switch to the off position. Second, turn the key all the way tcountercockwise to the open position. At the front of the unit, below the hearth opening there is a black front access panel. Should have a little recessed part. pull it out and expose the gas valve. Turn the plunger/knob that says off, on, pilot to the pilot position. You'll knw your in the pilot position when it lines up with the indicator (usually a red or black mark on the gas valve body). If you are in the pilot position, you will be able to push in the pilot (it will feel springy). Push the plunger in and then push the red button (piezo ignition button) in until it makes a snapping sound. You may have to do this several times because the air has to bleed out from the pilot tubing. This should light the pilot BUT wait. DO NOT LET GO OF THE PLUNGER ONCE THE PILOT IS LIT. You need to keep the plunger depressed for about 30 seconds and then let it go. After 30 seconds let the plunger go and verify the pilot is lit. If not try the last step over. After the pilot is lit, you may turn the plunger/knob to the on position. Now go back to the wall switch and flip it on. If it doesn't come on tap it hard. Sometimes dust can actually prevent it from making good connection. I work on fireplaces for a living and coincidentally worked on this model today. Simple as pie.
Relighting Your Furnace's Pilot Light
-
Turn off the gas at the main valve at your utility box
-
Wait five to ten minutes for gas fumes to waft away
-
Get a long match—yes, a fireplace match, not a standard match
-
Set the gas valve on your furnace to "pilot"
-
Press the red button as you hold the match to the pilot valve
-
Keep pressing the red button for 30-60 seconds so the pilot can heat the
thermocouple. Release the button and see if the pilot remains lit
-
If pilot goes out, wait five to ten minutes and repeat the process
-
Once the pilot stays lit, turn the main gas valve back on
-
If the pilot light continues to go out, call a technician, who may need
to adjust or replace your thermocouple or adjust your pilot
