i have a acer aspire 5720-6438 that i bought from futureshop about 2 months ago. When vista was installed, this problem never surfaced, but after installing XP pro, this problem started happening. At first I thought it was power save mode, so tried turning off all power options, but the problem persisted. Then I thought about the overheating, but while the laptop was warm after shutting off, it started up instantly with no downtime. tried changing the surface it was on, to get more airflow, but still shutting off. Not sure if I should re-install vista or what. Ubuntu worked fine, but my wife doesn't know linux commands, and so wants windows.

if the ram was faulty, don't you think we would have noticed some caching problems when we first got the laptop, you have to remember we've had it for 3 months.

Hi manawell - What's you're operating system please?
Does it turn off completely or keep rebooting? Are you by chance doing the same thing when this happens or different things? What's the make and mogel# of your laptop?

It is very likely that your laptop is overheating. How often does it turn itself off? When it turns off do you have to wait a minute or so before it will turn back on? Is it hot to the touch by the time it shuts off?

1.how do i go through the setup

i think it could be a virus, but just to make shore visit are computer store or the acer factory and you should reinstall vista to make shore if its from that.
