The 153 is the first part of the model # example 153-xxx, This is the prefix for MTD mowers.
Yoy can find the approxamate year by looking on the engine. The serial number usually has a date code. Like briggs and stratton will have a model # like 125K02 0245 E1 04218 53 the last two digits are the manufacturing facilty, The numbers before that are the date code 04218 means 2004 Feb. 18 was when the engine was made.
You can go to MTD's website and do a prsts search and it will ask for appx. serial number like the 153- xxx this will take you to an illistrated parts list as well as an owners manual.

if you have the old belt take it with you to a local parts store. if you don't have the old one, then take a long piece of cord and run it around the pully's the way it should go and tie it to the right size ( or atleast close it it) and take that to the parts stor and get a belt that size you can adjust the tension when you get it back on...good luck
