Question about Home

1 Answer

I've had a Moen shower fixture for years. Suddenly the knob is no longer turning and I find it is cracked inside and thus affecting the grip. Called Moen and they sent out a replacement. Broke again. Another replacement. Broke again. I am now using a wrench to turn the knob. Will I have to replace the entire system?

You will need to replace the cartridge, along with the handle.
plastic gets brittle over time, but adding a difficult to turn cartridge will cause it to break more frequently.

make sure when you replace the cartridge, to clean everything well. a small wire brush will do, no need to scrub, unless there is a buildup of scale. just a light brushing inside the valve.

clean and dry, then lubricate inside the valve, and the new cartridge with non-silicone based lubricant. this will make your valve work like new.

Single-handle tub/shower: knob turns but no water comes out.

Try removing the screw in center, and pull handle off. Check to see if maybe just inside of handle is stripped, or if it has a plastic insert with splines that are stripped. Thus just replace handle or insert or both. You can try turning it with vise grips or pliers carefully when handle off to see if tap itself is still good. My guess is a replacement handle and/or insert and you'll probably be good to go. Any hardware store should stock parts, reasonably priced.

You need to install a new moen cartridge its a single handle posi-temp cartridge you should be able to get 1 for free if you are the original owner by calling 1-800-buy-moen more than likely when soldering in the new valve a little bit of solder broke free into the cartridge or hard water. When the water gets turned off and then turned back on it can break free alot of particles that can get jammed up in these cartridges or any fixture for that matter you will need a cartridge puller to perform this job with ease.

PIPE TO SHOWER HEAD IS SEIZED ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR GETTING IT OUT

Good Afternoon, GWBreish:

If the 'seize' is from hard water (white or green deposits on the fixture) a towel or sponge soaked in vinegar or CLR van be tied or velcro bagged onto the fixture for 15 to 30 minutes, then the residue attacked with a scrubber or steel wool pad. If the seize in inside the fixture, you will have unscrew the face plats and paint or swab CLR or vinegar to the meshed parts of the handle.

Double check your installation. Is this a new shower Assembly? If so the parts that are with the new unit should work.
As far as the leak double check that any part that needs pipe tape is installed. Make sure everything is seated properly and is tight.
I am sure there are just a few simple oversights on the installation. Check the product sheets attached. All of them were downloaded from Moens site.

Good luck...Jim

You are not the first. Usually you must break the plastic handle to remove it and then you can access the screw and have leverage to hold the brass stem with pliers while you try removing the screw. Caution, do not try to bend the handle to break it off or you will break the brass facet stem. Also, there are two styles of handles: one has a short innercone, the other has a longer inner cone. You need to know this before you purchase a replacement. Goodluck< Macgivor

Just installed a Moen shower fixture, & the knob for the shower head doesn't send water to the shower head-- I don't get it!

I just installed one this weekend. Make sure that the cartridge has the embossed "HC" at the top (for Hot on left, Cold on right) when you slide it back in. Also, before putting the handle on turn the cartridge shaft so that the completely flat part is toward the top and the side with the small notch at the end is toward the bottom.

Moen shower/tub faucet

hi... yes that's a very common issue with moen "cartridges" -- it's very simple to fix..... grasp the handle and give it a gentle tug upwards when the water is on... if it retracts again, pull the handle out again and tug again but this time a bit harder. Not sure what causes this on new cartridges but it will fix your issue.

Shower head leaks water when water is turned on

take out the cartridge from the fixture and make sure it has all of the "O" rings and stoppers.
look at the instruction again, make sue you are installing it the right side up. if all that, the shower still leak, then you need to talk to the place you brought the fixture, it may have a defective cartridge.

Broken shower knob

You need a screw extractor.51nxsfhdrzl._sl500_aa280_.jpg
One end drills a hole into the remaining part of the screw. The other end fits inot the hole and turns counter clockwise, gripping the screw and removing it.

You can also buy a bolt extractor which will fit over the stub of the screw. This may work better if you have enough room to access it due to the small diamiter of those screws.

Otherwise, breaking off the surrounding pieces of plastic from the handle and removing the screw with pliers and replacing the handle is about the only way.
