Re: no task bar or icons only desktop picture
Start up in safe mode by pushing the f8 key on startup this will give you networking capabilities then follow these instructions
Hijackthis is a first line tool to examine certain areas of the computer. It does not show everything and lots of malware is hidden from it
To download Hijackthis
go to http://www.merijn.org/programs.php and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu. Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log. Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply. It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

If you are saying your computer boots up but there are No Icons on the desktop, then a virus or infection has hidden them or changed some settings.
Click the Ctrl/Alt/Del keys to start the Task Manager. Press and Hold the Ctrl and Alt keys then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up click the Processes tab. Under the processes tab click the columnar heading Image Name to sort the items running in alphabetical order. Look to see if you see explorer.exe running under the image name. If you do click it one time to highlight it then click the END PROCESS button at the bottom right of the Task Manager Window.
Next click FILE at the very top left corner of the Task Manager Window and select New Task (Run..). When the Create New Task window pops up type in: explorer.exe and press OK. Your desktop icons and start menu should start populating.
Are you running Windows? If you are, the easiest way to fix this problem is to simultaneously hit Ctrl, Shift, Esc. The Task Manager will then pop up. Click "File" > "New Task (Run...)." When the run dialog appears, type "explorer" and then hit Enter. This will force the explorer to launch My Documents (the default folder explorer launches), which, in turn, forces your desktop and taskbar to load.

Try resetting the desktop. Right click on the desktop, click properties, then open the desktop tab. Change the desktop picture and see if that works. If it doesn't try a system restore. You will be able to access the start menu by pressing the windows key. If these don't work you'll need to run a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc.
