Question about Samsung SF-5100 Plain Paper Laser Fax
If you have hi speed internet make sure you are using a filter on the phone line from the fax machine.

Unplug the fax machine from the line. Plug a normal phone, preferably not a cordless set, into the line and check if the line is still noisy. If it is still noisy have the phone company test and repair the line. If it is not noisy check the connecting cord between the phone jack and fax for damage. The cord can be replaced with one from a normal phone to see if this solves the problem. If the line checks out normal and the problem persists even with the cord replaced the fax will need repair, most likely to the internal lightning arrestor which is not a user-serviceable part.

Tips for a great answer:
Go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set. Make sure the phone wire which you insert in fax machine getting proper dial tone and getting out going calling facility.

The phone line to begin with, can you get a dial tone when you press speaker button? Is it clear? if no dial tone then, Is the phone line from the wall plug into the correct socket of the fax machine ? (it goes into the one marked line, not the ext one).....
next trick would be to plug in a normal phone to wall socket to insure we have dial tone and eliminate it being a telstra fault,
Could also be wise to check filter is installed on that line if we have recently installed ADSL Broadband.
