Motherboard Manual I am looking for a motherboard manual, the board is a SiS 730 BN730E Ultra, I have unpluged the front USB socket plugs and not relizing they where separat plugs and not one big block they have split on me and now I dont know witch plug goes onto what pin on the board. Can you help Alan Simmons

How many different ways can they possibly go? Persist a little! It's safe to just plug them in and see which way the system starts.

Safer in fact than wasting time digging up the disc! Sorry.

If you want the manual or have thought of a way to hunt down the documentation authors and present them bouquets of gladiolus, you could of course google a bit and come up pretty blank (unless you hit on ECS's purchase of SiS, or browse EETimes for industry news) or be faced with the age and performance/watt of that system at http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=1381

A) Let's start with the two power cables coming from the Power Supply, that go to the motherboard;

1) 24-pin ATX main power cable

Looking at the motherboard photo, the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector; is at the bottom.
Two rows of 12 socket holes, in a yellowish/whitish connector.

Motherboard installed in computer case, you will find it to the Right.

(The motherboard view shown, is clocked 90 degrees to the Right; in comparison to how it actually sits in the computer case)

GENERAL example,

[NOTE* Color of connector does NOT matter ]

Note the hinged Lock Clip on the power cable's connector.
Also the TAB on the motherboard connector.
When power cable is deemed to be plugged in tightly, and properly; the Lock Clip will be over the Tab.

{Lock Clip operates on the same principle, as a see-saw on a playground. Top is squeezed in to release Lock Clip}

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable

Looking at the motherboard photo, the motherboard connector for this power cable is;
Straight up from the white Processor socket,
To the right of the square finned Aluminum Heatsink.

General example of said power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Has a Lock Clip too.
Remember about the color of connector, thing.
Can be pink with neon polka dots. Doesn't matter.
WHAT the power cable IS, does matter.

This power cable is power for the Processor.
It ain't plugged in, you have no computer.

(Scroll down to Motherboard Layout. It is PU521 )

That's it for power cables that plug into the motherboard.
Moving on..........

The Harddrive is a SATA unit. The optical drive is a SATA unit.
(CD/DVD drive)
Means you need a SATA power cable for each one of them.
General example,

Note the L-shaped opening in the connector. Hard to see in this photo, but I will show a better view in a minute.

Also; between a SATA data cable's connector, and a SATA power cable's connector; the SATA power cable connector is the larger of the two.
Has 15 contact pins.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.

Often there is a lock on this power cable's connector.
A tab that sticks up, or a 'bulb' type affair.
Depress with thumb, when plugging in, or unplugging.

Harddrive needs a power cable, and data cable.
So does optical drive/s.

B) General example of a SATA data cable, and it's respective connector,

Just referring to the cable shown at the top, for now.
Now you can see the L-shaped opening a little better.
See how the 'foot' of the L goes down? That is the direction you want it, when plugging in.

The motherboard connector shown below the SATA data cable, is a SATA connector.
This particular style is OPEN.
Your motherboard uses the type that is CLOSED.
Note also the L shape on the motherboard connector.

The connector shown for that SATA data cable, is a 90 degree bent elbow.
If your SATA data cables have this style of connector, they plug into the Harddrive, and optical drive/s.

The straight type of connector, plugs into the motherboard.
It can also plug into the Harddrive, and optical drive; if your SATA data cable has two straight connectors.

The SATA data cable connectors on your motherboard, are all the way to the Left. (In the motherboard photo)

Orange, Light Blue, Dark Blue, and White.
Note that they have a L shape in the middle.

Now scroll down the HP Support page, to Motherboard Layout.

Orange = SATA4
Dark Blue = SATA1
Light Blue = SATA3
White = SATA2

SATA1 is for the Harddrive
SATA2 is for an optical drive.
If you have more than 1 optical drive, it plugs into SATA3.

(Make sure SATA3 is ENABLED in BIOS Setup)

C) The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to; is the Front Panel header.

Looking at the motherboard photo, look again at the Orange SATA4 connector. To the Immediate RIGHT is the Front Panel header,

I believe though, that the cable coming from the Front Panel; has one solid plug-on connector. Not individual wires.

Note how the Front Panel header on the motherboard, is missing one pin. This is the Key.
The cable connector going to it, should have one socket hole blocked off.

Should only be one cable coming from the Front Panel, that has the correct plug-on connector.
The other cables coming from the Front Panel, will have different size plug-on connectors.

Going further.........
Look at what is installed in the Front Panel;

USB ports, audio ports, (Headphone and Microphone), Card Reader, etc.
You can follow the cables, and get a pretty good idea of where they go, in the Front Panel.

For example you can follow the cables that go to the USB ports.
Follow the two cables that go to the Card Reader.
Follow the cables that go to Microphone, and Headphone jacks.

Then by process of elimination, you know which cable goes to the Front Panel header.

D) Front Audio
Looking at the motherboard photo, look towards the Top/Left corner.
The Yellow header is for the Front Panel audio ports.
Headphone, and Microphone.

E) Coming down the Left side, in the motherboard photo; look at the two White rectangular headers.
Match up in the Motherboard Layout, and bottom of HP Support page.

USB1 2, and USB1 2.

EACH USB header, is for TWO USB ports.

That is why they both have USB1 2 marked near them, in Motherboard Layout.

A Card Reader SHOULD use two cables, and One USB header.
It may be though, that the Card Reader will use both of those White USB headers.

Either the Card Reader plugs into them, or the USB ports in the Front Panel.
If the cable connector fits, plug that cable in. (On)

USB is USB.
Card Reader uses USB too.

Point?
If the cable's connector fits, plug it in. (On)

In the motherboard photo, there are two White connectors;
Above the Orange SATA4 connector, and Below the Light Blue, and White SATA connectors.
(Light Blue = SATA3, White = SATA2)

The USB ports up front probably connect to them. (Front Panel)
Follow the cables to Front Panel USB ports.
What type of connector do the cables use?

All FOUR of those USB connectors on the motherboard, may NOT be used.
Perhaps just two of them.

That doesn't 'sound' very concise, huh?
However it is my contention, that each cable coming from the Front Panel; should have a different connector.

Going further;
The Card Reader, and the USB ports in the Front Panel; may have the SAME type of connector, on the end of their cables.

Again, the Card Reader uses a USB header, (Or headers), on the motherboard.
So do the two USB ports in the Front Panel.

Therefore it does not matter which USB header on the motherboard, that either one of them are connected to.

F) Looking at the motherboard photo, look above the Ram Memory slots, to the far Right.

Right above ram memory Slot 1, that is White in color. (DIMM 1)
There is a small Electrolytic Capacitor, with a Black plastic sleeve.
Right above it is a small White 3-pin connector.

This is where the Processor fan plugs in.
(CPU_FAN)

G) Right above the square Aluminum finned Heatsink, is the 3-pin connector for the computer case fan.
SYS_FAN
(System Fan)

(The square Aluminum finned Heatsink, sits on the Northbridge chip.
Which is part of the motherboard chipset)

That about does it for me.

I'm trying to find out if the whole front panel power switch on the dell dimension 8300 can be replaced with a generic brand . I have changed the motherboard, replacing it with a SIS 648FX Foxconn board....


The problem you're running into is that Dell uses proprietary parts,like quite a few manufacturers still do.The board you bought should have come with a manual on a CD or DVD.You can look through the manual and see what the connections are,they're even printed,usually,on the board beside each set of pins.It's very small print.
What you have going for you is that the Dell multi-plug is also labeled as to what wires are for each application.You'll have to cut the plug off and put individual connectors on each wire,then connect them to the corresponding pins.You can get the parts at an electronic supply store,even Radio Shack.
Just be careful,and make sure that if your hands are inside the case,the cord is unplugged.

This motherboard is a SIS chipset socket 478 motherboard. I dought that this type of motherboards are in production. Chk if there are any refurbished computers stores that might have or chk ebay for Sis 651m chipset mothersboards. it will work with you pc

Do the motherboard have an usb plug for front case usb and how tu plug it


this woudl depend on the motherboard but yes most do. look for a silk screen mark on the board marking USB1 or USB2. look at the yellow connectors on this pic for an idea of what to look for

My card reader on my computer has stopped working!? ok i took my computer in to my computer teacher to get it fixed, well she put in a second hard drive in and said it should fine. well it does but...


Ah, My Bad, big_dude2010, perfectly understandable about the budget thing. The world is in an economic crisis right now.

As for reattaching the Card Reader cable, can't help you.

OH, I'm just PLAYIN'!


Before we go ANY further:

1) Computer off, and unplugged from power.

Unplug the power cable FROM the surge protector, and NOT plugged into the surge protector, and take it out of the back of the Power Supply.

With the power cable plugged into the surge protector, and unplugging it out of the Power Supply, you could create a voltage spike.

Result can burn out the Power Supply, and may go on to burn out the Processor, Motherboard, Ram Memory, and a graphics card. (IF used)

Many have stated, that they do this all the time. Eventually, they come back to state they fried out their power supply, and/or motherboard, and so on.

2) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case to relieve your body of Static electricity.

Static can fry out, (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside your computer.
(For this reason also work on a table. If you have a carpet floor, refrain from swinging your feet back, and forth.
If you get up, walk away, then return, TOUCH the metal frame again)

If you already know the above, please disregard.

The Card Reader cable has a white sheath, and is approximately as thick as a No.2 pencil.

It should have 8 wires in it.
Orange, Yellow, Blue, Brown, Red, White, Green, and Black.

It will have a white rectangular connector on one end, that has 10 socket holes. 2 rows of 5 holes.
Only 8 socket holes are used.

The other end of the cable should have a Black connector. It also has 10 socket holes. 2 rows of 5 holes. This connector plugs into the circuit board of the Card Reader.

The White connector end plugs into the motherboard. It plugs into the Front USB 1 header on the motherboard.

(Connector on a motherboard is referred to as a Header)

Orienting the motherboard, so we are both looking at it in the same direction.
Processor to the top. Ram Memory slots to the right.
There are 3 white PCI slots down towards the bottom.

The white PCI slot that is closest to the edge of the motherboard, is PCI3. (PCI 3)

Down below the PCI 3 slot is a blue header. NOT the one you want.
That's for the audio ports in the front of the computer. (Front Panel)

To the right of the blue header, is a white header. This is the one you want. Front USB1. (The Front USB1 header, is below the Right/Bottom corner of the PCI 3 slot)

Note that there are 5 pins going along the top of the Front USB 1 header, and 4 pins going along the bottom.

The missing pin, or blank spot, helps you to orient the white connector of the card reader cable.

The card reader cable's white connector also has a missing socket hole, or blank spot.

There is No slot on the header for the motherboard, and No locating lug on the Card Reader cable's, white connector.

Line the card reader cable connector's blank spot, up with the blank spot on the Front USB1 header.

Scroll down the page about halfway, and you'll see an illustration of your motherboard.

(To enlarge it for better viewing, you can right-click right on it, then in the drop down menu, left-click on - Save As
Put this in your My Pictures folder.

Then go to My Pictures, and double-click on the illustration of the motherboard.
Now go below in the window, and click on the + sign to Zoom In.
Use the bottom, and side bar, to move it around to the view you want)

Below the illustration is an actual photograph of the motherboard, with no hardware components installed.

The Black connector that goes to the circuit board of the Card Reader, plugs in like this.

There are four wires across the top. There are five wires across the bottom.

Looking INSIDE your computer, TOWARDS the Card Reader circuit board, the four wires go on top, when plugged in. (Not shouting)

Again, looking at the back of the Card Reader, the color code of the wires on the top, going from Left to Right, are:
Thin Black wire, Green, White, and Red.

Wires going along the bottom, starting from Left going Right,
Thick Black wire, Brown, Blue, Yellow, and Orange

Hi there.
Get a strong flashlight and a magnifying glass (if you have one). On the motherboard look for the front panel, it should be marked PWR and coloured green, also the plug that connects to it should be marked PWR_SW. On some boards there are no colours but the markings are the same, so take a good close look.

Front usb connections

The solution was posted by JontyBonkers.


The pins go like this:
1 2 3 4 5
_ 6 7 _ 8

1 = ground
2 = ground
3 = D1-
4 = ground
5 = D1+
6 = D2-
7 = D2+
8 = +5V

It seems that the case for those Packard-Bells had a small circuit board that divided the 5V line to both sockets.

D- are usually white, D+ - green, 5V - red, ground - black

Look up the motherboard manual that came along with the motherboard pack. It has to be there or else look up a website pertaining to the said motherboard model.
