I am trying to connect to the internet using the linksys WRT54G and a motorola modem from AT&T. The computer recognized and connected to the Linksys (set up was very easy), but the internet will not...

The steps will very some depending on the model of the modem and router but these steps should help.

How do I proprly set up a Linksys router for FastAccess DSL? Important Note: Due to some operational issues it is VERY important that you have the latest firmware on your Linksys router. Please go to the Linksys Download Website and ensure you have the newest firmware.

Configuration of a Linksys router depends on the type of broadband service and other equipment connected. This is a generalized Linksys Router FAQ and some firmware, capabilities, and actual screen shots may vary. This initial setup is all that is needed to configure and connect your Linksys based network for FastAccess. Any additional setup for features like WEP, DHCP IP ranges, port triggering, etc is out of the scope of this FAQ. Other FAQs may be more appropriate and provide more specific information:
•If you are using a BellSouth supplied Westell 2100/2200/6100 modem please reference the FAQ here.
•If you are using a BellSouth supplied Motorola/Netopia 2210 modem please reference the FAQ here.
•If you here IFITL (PCData) service please reference the FAQ here.
•Both the modem and router must be reset to default.
•The BellSouth Installation CD and Connection Manager are not required to use this configuration.
•Since BellSouth assigns static IPs via your username the configurations shown are applicable to both dynamic and single static IP customers.
• You will be using the PPPoE client built into the Linksys router for connectivity/authentication. Please delete any other unused PPP clients like Enternet300, RASPPP, or the native XP client.

Section 1 - Linksys Router Configuration
bred.gifStep 1
Verify that your NIC card is set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically". Power down the router and any PCs. Connect one of the router's LAN ports to the computer NIC and power up the router and then the computer. Reset the router to default by pressing the reset button for roughly 25 seconds (exact placement of the button differs per model).

bred.gifStep 2
Important note: The following screen shots are based on a Linksys BEFSR41v.2 router and your screen shots may be different, however the process and configurations are the same. Open a browser session and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address field to access the Linksys Interface. At the Username and Password prompt enter admin (without quotes) in the Password Field.

image4039.gif

bred.gifStep 3
On the Linksys Setup page select PPPoE from the WAN Connection Type pull down. Enter your BellSouth Username followed by "@bellsouth.net". Enter your BellSouth Password. Select Keep Alive and enter 180 seconds Redial Period field. Do not enter anything in the Host Name or Domain Name fields. If your model has the ability to adjust MTU size (not shown below) select Enable or Manual and enter 1492 in the Size field. Click on Apply to save the changes. You may get a "Settings are successful" message, click on Continue (if required).

Section 2 - Physical Connections and Power Up
bred.gifStep 4
Power everything down and physically connect the modem, the router, and any computer(s).

Westell 2100 shown. Pictures by Andy Houtz
bred.gifStep 5
Power up the network equipment in this order:

Westell or Motorola Modem (wait for DSL synch)
•Linksys Router
•Computer(s)
•Open a browser session and enter "192.168.1.1" in the address field to access the Linksys Interface. Click on the Status tab from the menu then click on the Connect button to connect to the Internet.
•Go surfing!

image4845.gif

bred.gifImportant Additional Information
•The Westell 6100 and Motorola 2210 modems have an "Internet" light that is green whenever there is an active PPPoE session initiated by the Westell. Since you are using the Linksys to establish the PPPoE session the light will stay off. This is normal.
Do not change the Linksys Operating Mode from Gateway Mode (default setting) to Router Mode, or it will not function correctly.
•The Linksys "Auto" MTU capability does not function correctly on some models/firmware. You must manually enable the MTU and adjust the size to 1492 (or less). If you are experiencing slow/erratic speeds, constant disconnects, or receive a "Can not obtain IP address from the server" or "PPPoE negotiation fail" errors click here.
•You should check your tweak settings to optimize your new network. Reminder: If you change your MTU, make sure that it is set identically on all equipment (PCs and routers) in the network.

I hope this was helpful,
Shawn

I lost the start up disc to the router. Is there anyway to get another one or have someone walk me through setting it up again without the disc?

Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. Then configure wan settings and lan settings enable wireless if you want to use wifi Then save settings and restart router Then connect cable from internet service provider to WAN port of router and connect ethenet lan cable from computer to lan port of router. . Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

How do I setup my wireless router to my westell bellsouth modem and ensure it works?

Are you trying to set up the router.
You can do it manually without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

When you try to set up the router using the set up Disc, sometimes you will get this error 322. This error says that there is hardwired connection between the router and the computer. Even if you connect the cable between the router and the computer , you will get this error message.

How do i hook this up without the disc, linksys wrt54g. someone gave it to me but no disc

Hello

All you need to do is to plug the router into your computer using a ethernet cable. Now go to your internet broser and type in the default ip of your router.(192.168.1.1), if it does not work you need to reset the router first. The password and username will be admin for both.

Once you are in the web interface settings of the router, you can change the ip and username and password to what you need for your connection. Hope this can help you.

Best regards

My cd rom wont read the disc

Here is a link to Linksys's section (with downloads) on that particular router. http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G/ <br> If you are just trying to modify the settings of the router, you do not need software to do that other than a web browser. Start your internet browser of choice and type in the URL box 192.168.100.1 which should bring up your modem's settings.

The Linksys WRT54G ver.6 worked until yesterday when I lost access to the internet. The "power" light is blinking continuously, so I went through the troubleshooting exercise of power off, power on - no...

Blinking power light usually indicates device being faulty. Was there a power surge? Try resetting the router by pushing the small reset button at the back with a pin for 10 seconds, then power it off and on. See what happens

Set to work with centurytel instead of bell south

Howdy - You may have a two fold problem here. First of all the Westell wireless modem/router 327w has the access IP address of - 192.168.1.254. (Or you can simply type "launchmodem" in the address bar - (one word - no quotes)) This will definitely get you in. You will then see the setup menu. That problem solved...

Now, from what I understand, you are using a Westell wireless modem/router 327w made for Bellsouth/ATT. If this is the case, you will see the Bellsouth Logo on the setup page. Additionally, it is stated on the page below, that you cannot use a Bellsouth modem/router for any other ISP (Internet Service Provider) This is due to the Bellsouth/ATT firmware that Westell builds into this modem/router.

This is the page link:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth/3.141_Westell_327W__wireless__Info#13772

This is the relevant quote:
"The BellSouth supplied 327W (model C90-327W30-06) is made exclusively for BellSouth FastAccess. They are functionally different from retail Westells (or any model designed for use with other ISPs) and the firmware between them are not compatible and can not be interchanged."

That being said, you still might attempt to use this 327W with centurytel but I do not know if it will work. I use the Bellsouth 327W and it is GREAT. Good luck.

P.S. - Please be advised that Westell does manufacture an identical 327W that does NOT have the Bellsouth/ATT firmware.installed. This is the "generic" version I suppose but I have no experience with this one. If you need more just ask. :)
