New users get to try the service completely Free afterwhich it costs $6 per call and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

SOURCE: No Appearance of external hard drive or symbol on My Computer

hese drive do not usually come partitioned and formatted (as different systems need different formatting)

to do this you need to go into logical drive management to partition the drive. (right click on my computer, select Manage then when the mangement screen comes up select logical drive manager, you should then be able to see your unpartitioned drive which you should then be able to partition and format)
if drive is not detected, remember that these devices need "powered" USB ports, which makes use on some laptops and some ports on PCs difficult as some ports are "low powered" ports, which means the drive can not draw enough current.

this can be resolved by using a "powered" USB hub, to supply the extra power.

Slow transfer external hard drive

Both devices must have USB 3.0 capability to enjoy the high transfer speed that 3.0 has to offer. Check the other device (not the Buffalo) as see if it has USB 3.0 support.
First, make sure the firmware for the external and the source device are up to date. Next, try swapping the cable.
If that doesn't work, check the source and target hard drives to symptoms of failure. The transfer speed will be slow if one of the drives is failing. The manufacturer of the drive should have free diagnostic tools on their website. If not try WD Lifeguard Diagnostics or Seagate Seatools. If you are running Linux, go with smartmontools.
If the drives are healthy and if 3.0 is supported on both devices check the transfer speed with different files. Transferring one large file is faster than transferring a lot of small files.
If all else fails call Buffalo and request a replacement.

My Hitachi Touro 4TB external hard drive get stuck every time I try to transfer large files. How do I fix that? The format is NTFS and the files are 4g and up.

External hard drives are popular portable storage devices because they allow you to back up files such as documents, music and videos, and transfer files from one computer to another. While external hard drives vary in storage capacity, they are ideal for storing large files such as videos and animations. Files of this nature consume volumes of hard drive and memory space and are best stored in external hard drives. Whether you are using Windows or Mac OSX, transfer large memory consuming files to your external hard drive quickly and safely. Connect your external hard drive to your computer using the Firewire or USB cable that came with your portable storage device. If its transferring to slow the usb lead might be at fault or you might need a usb 3 card which makes data transfers much faster USB 3 card will provide more power when needed to the device to gain maximum throughput and conserve power when the device is connected but is idling http://blog.premiumusb.com/2010/09/usb-2-0-vs-usb-3-0/ these can be purchased on Ebay cheap and easy to install http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-e-PCI-Express-USB3-0-Card-new-NEC-720200AF1-chipset-/330608109325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf9c7670d for roughly $9 or $10free postage Power on your drive. Some external hard drives do not have a power button, because your computer powers them on automatically using the Firewire or USB cable. Click the Windows "Start" orb and click "Computer" or "My Computer" to launch Windows Explorer if you are using a Windows PC. You should see your external hard drive in the "Drives" section next to the "Local drive (C:)" drive. If you are using a Mac, you should see your external hard drive on the desktop. Double-click your external hard drive to open its hard disk window. If you have any content on your external hard drive, you should see it in this window. Drag files from your computer to your external hard disk's window. Because you are uploading large files, make sure their memory s do not exceed your drive's total memory. Your computer shows a status bar displaying the upload progress for each file you are transferring to your drive. The upload time varies depending on the of the file. Close the hard disk window when you finish uploading the files you want to store, and then click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the System Tray next to the clock, if you are using Windows. The hardware removal window launches. Click your external hard drive's icon in the hardware removal window, and then click "Stop." When prompted, disconnect your external hard drive from your computer. Drag your external hard drive's icon from the desktop to the trash bin on the dock if you are using a Mac. Disconnect your drive from your computer. If you right click in the bottom toolbar select applications to see whats running at the time when transferring the files might be a virus or malware if you see something running that should not be select end now also processes to see what ticking over in the background

Hope this helps b>

Fist clean your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor specifically around your central processing unit making sure there is no moisture in the air line
as dust will cause a lot of static which will make a computer overheat and cause lots of problems
Try replacinng all leads that are attached to your external hard drive
then try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/f which will automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive
good luck with this

if the computer reads the hard drive and data but does not transfer it it may be a space issue otherwise if its reading nothing it may be a connection issue cause by lose wires or a faulty port ensure you have the drivers for the external installed and windows updated

How do I transfer data from my hard drive to added external drive

you can this many different ways. The most straightforward is to go to the drive and select "folder and file options" in the view menu and selct "show hidden files", that way when you copy and paste you will get every single file. The other way is to use a program such as Acronis Tru Image and use the clone option. I am assuming that you want an image of your C:\ drive.
