I had the exact same problem. The Alarm light was always on and the screen said "Document in ADF. When I pressed "OK" it would read "Eject the document". Even after I placed paper in the ADF and the paper would feed the document through it, the error and the Alarm light was still there. I found the solution, Lift the cover to expose the flat bed scanner glass. Under the cover, there is a long white bar with two white tabs perpendicular to the white bar. One of the tabs was retracted. Pull on the tab until it is fully extended. The alarm turns off and there is no longer the error. Simple solution to a damn annoying issue.
We were having the same problem with our printer. The tab was retracted just a little so you wouldn't really notice it. Thanks for posting this.
Kunle Abass, thanks it works, its quit frustrating.Well thanks to the solution provider and Google for the opportunity
I pulled the 2 white tabs. One of them appeared to be fully extended but did make a slight sound when tugged. It seemed to come almost loose, but when I turned the printer off and back on, the alarm was off and I was able to print. Thanks so much for this tip. It certainly isn't among the literature from Canon.
After hours of frustration, this was the answer! Just pulled the tab out slightly and it works. Many thanks.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was ready to hurl the printer out the window!
Oh my goodness! I wish I would have Googled a little longer before giving up and calling Canon. They are drop shipping a replacement printer tomorrow, as this one is only 4 months old. I found the white tab, I wiggled it, the printer works as it should. Of course, maybe I should call Canon back tomorrow and let them know how to fix their printers. Or I could just tell them to Google it. :)
That was really helpfull thanks mate, you are a legend
I had the same problem "Document in ADF" yet it ejects and you can send a page through it by 'ejecting' over and over and it didn't clear the "jam". So I Googled and found this thread. Went back and looked at the two tabs. Yes, one of them was slightly shorter than the other. I gave it a gentle tug and it came into position with a click sound. Then all was ok. Ya Fixed it !! Onya, Fixya ! and thanks to you guys on this forum - you are awesome, and have saved the hassle of a tedious warrantee return.
I was absolutely ready to throw this printer in the trash. This worked and I wanted to say Thank you!!! This fixed this issue within a second. Anyone having this afd problems should try this solution! Thank you again.
You prevented my printer from going out the window. Thank you.

I this printer at a yard sale for two bucks. When I tried to use it the ADF error came up. Your solution worked. I'm thrilled. Thanks
Thanks alot!!! At first I wasn't getting it to work then it did.
HELP! Both my tabs appear to be fully extended. I've pulled on them pretty hard (trying not to damage them) and neither of them move. I've restarted twice. No change. HELP!

Amanjmatt,
Not sure if this is the same problem or not, but my printer was saying the same thing. I was trying to send a fax and it would always give an alarm and display that message on the second page. I realized that the mx340 has two "start" buttons. One for black copies/faxes and one for color copies/faxes. Make sure you dial your number and push the "black start button" since most people do not have color fax machines.
hope this helps.

The tab thingy worked! I need to use a multi-tool to get a firm enough grip on one of the tabs and GENTLY tugged on it. CLICK! it moved! Closed the lid - VIOLA! IT WORKS!
Both of my white tabs seem to be fully extended. Still no fix. Help! Is there something I should do with the bar?
