There are two gears that are made of plastic that have hard rubber toothed sprockets pressed on them. These sprockets split and allow the drive motor to slip. Epson will only sell the motor assembly and not just the gear. I used a dot of supperglue to repair the sprockets and all works fine now.

really, can you draw a picture of that?
you mean the cd/dvd tray jam and then ERROR

  • chrisl4444 Jan 15, 2011

Boy that is hard to see. little black plastic gear split in between the teeth on the motor shaft sprocket.

THANKS! This was a big help. On mine, it was the little black gear hub that comes off the motor spindle. It was the side that faced in toward the scanner window. I had to remove the two screws that held the motor in - and that freed it up just enough to pull it out and find the crack and drop the glue in. I did not take the motor completely out. Now, if the glue holds, I'm back in business.

Hi Riley, I hope you read this, as I have the same issue with my printer, but can you describe in more detail how you fixed your printer? I see nothing that is split or broken, and everything with regard to what you mention, i.e., the black gear hub, seems to work as it should.

  • mike calabro Apr 21, 2011

Nothing more I can say on the description except that you need alot of light and a magnifying glass to see the crack. Mine also would "work" when not actually trying to move paper through. But when put under the stress, it would screach and not move the paper.

THIS WAS THE FIX for my paper jam as well!! I want to say a huge thanks to InvisionTec for stating how to repair it.

Thank you for the article. I just glued the black gear together and it worked. Saved me a trip in to have it serviced.

No need to REPLACE the small motor assembly. You need to take the motor/gear assembly from the printer and inspect the inner BLACK gear on the motor drive, AND the outer BLACK gear (inspect both black gears). Both of these can crack and cause slippage on the motor axle. Here is a picture of the drive gear, that I removed the gear with slight prying pressure and added some gel superglue to it in the crack and on it's contact point to the drive axle. It's held in place, and works beautifully (I had another Artisan with the inner gear cracked, hence I knew to look at and inspect both gears);

Johnny i just did the super glue trick on the outer gear. I did it with the motor and gear still in place. It worked, but its chattering like crazy when it runs. I guess ill have to take my time to remove motor and shaft and check both gears. Removing it is probably the way to go. The super glue i used didnt want to dry and i tried holding the 2 teeth together with apair of tweezers. There is still a small gap between the 2 teeth and i suspect its what casuign the chattering, that and maybe the inner gear is split as well. Im wondering if the replacement part is any better. I just got the exploded parts drawing from for it emailed ot me by National Parts Depot. I suspect they wouldnt know if its been changed. Theres probably a reason they used rubber, so it owuldnt strip the nylon gears.

Well no luck for me. I removed the motor and only the exposed gear was cracked. I pried it off the axle and glued it back together. As soon as i put it back on the axle, i split again. Maybe letting it sit for a longer period would have worked better. It still works, but is still making the same noise when the ADF runs. All other gears look fine. The replacement motor costs about $20 with shipping. May just replace it.

LarryP... you have to understand, the ADF makes a lot of racket/noise even when working as-it-should. AS LONG AS it's feeding a document, it's working. Don't mind the loud clackity-clack of the drive gears and feed mechanism. Mine breaks often, and I have to repair it (with gel super glue) about every 200 pages. PITA, and I've pretty much quit using it. NOW, my scanner leaves a 1/2" dark streak down the page. I'm bummed, I really tried to like this printer (and I have two of them!)

ADF wont feed the paper through the printer

You can load up to 30 sheets of plain paper in the Artisan 800 ADF. If the ADF doesn't feed the paper, check the following.

1. Make sure that you are loading plain paper only without a holes. 3-hole punched paper is not supported by this printer.

2. Load paper not exceed 30 sheets.

3. Open the ADF and check for any jammed paper or foreign object that is blocking the paper feeding path.

4. Check if the BIG GREEN ADF indicator is lit when you load paper in the ADF.

If the issue persists, your printer will require service. You can contact the Epson for warranty if your printer still under warranty. If your warranty expires, look for an a service center that can repair your printer.

Just fixed my problem today. It was the ADF assembly motor. The spur gear had cracked open where it can no longer grip tightly to the center rod when the motor spins. I bought a new motor assembly from CompassMicro for the total amount of $23 and my printer is back in running order like normal again. Beats taking it to a repair center and get ripped!

The ADF jams every time on the first sheet. seems like it is just not feeding the document all the way through. what can be done?

Try opening up the LEFT side of the ADF. Takes a little finger muscle to do this. Clean the rollers with a clean cloth, and check to see that there is nothing lodged in the mechanism (staples, loose paper bits, mother-in-laws, etc). Also, there is a limit to how many sheets the ADF can take at once - I haven't maxed mine out, so I don't know how many sheets is the maximum allowed.

Hope this helps

Epson 800 adf repeatedly jams. After clearing it still jams.

Hello there
You may not see a paper jam.

This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.

And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

I have a epson artisan 800 I'm tring to fax from the automatic feeder but it keeps making a grinding sound and then it says paper jam but paper never even went through

I took apart my artison 800 with 'paper jam' error and grinding noise. Sadly enough, it is the plastic gear attached to the stepper motor which is slipping and making the grinding noise. I tried to glue it and it worked once or twice and failed again. It is a design flaw and Epson should repair this for free if they are honest about this problem. Ir is not a user-caused problem.

Epson Artisan 800 Scanner leaves blue/grey stripe on side.

I had this exact same issue with two Artisan 800's. I was told it was a hardware issue. Both were returned under warranty to Epson. Have since had problems with ADF and that printer was returned. Warranty has now ended. Expecting to buy a new printer shortly: they last about 4 months before having problems. It won't be an Epson even though that's all I've owned for 10 years
