Hi, Thanks for the response. Tried that and it does not power up unfortunately. Was wondering if I was to purchase a similar garmin if you think it is possible to switch the internal parts in order to retrieve the information? Is this difficult?

    Thanks

Thank you once again for the response. I did talk to garmin and they did not mention being able to retrieve the information after asking them many questions. I will call them once again and ask them if this is possible. I have not given up yet and am currently making other calls as well. Any other ideas would be very much appreciated. I will post if I am able to finally retrieve the data.

Another thought, if I were to get a power source (double battery holder for 2 double AA batteries) say from radio shack and take it apart connect it to the garmin in order to power it up. Then connect to my computer via interface cable might this work?

    Thanks

Does the unit power up when attached via USB cable to your PC?

The parts involved in powering it up would also be involved in the storing of the data, most likely. You might try sending it in to Garmin asking them if they can retrieve the data for you.

If the unit won't power up with using fresh batteries, chances are that the guts have been toasted due to moisture, so adding an alternate source of power will probably not help you, at this point. You can try it, since the unit is toast at this point, and hopefully get it powered up. Let us know.

Checking charging system

Check the acid level in the battery. After a season running in hot weather, wet-plate batteries have often lost some water to evaporation. I see this often here in Texas. The new charge won't hold and electrical gremlins pop up often.
Also check for loose or corroded connectors on battery terminals and starter relay.

Try updating the unit`s software. This can be obtained for free from Garmin.com. A new satellite launched was causing reception problems and the update fixed it. This might be the problem with your unit. Come back and let us know if this fixed it.

My garmin etrex legend Cx wasn't used for a few months and now won't aquire satellites. Batteries have been changed to no avail.

Go to the Garmin.com website and download updated drivers/software for the unit. Make sure the drivers are for your specific unit as they are all different.

Screen goes blank after locating sattilites.

Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.

My etrex legend is also inoperative...

Inoperative as it won't turn on, or is there a line through the screen, or it won't recognize satellites?? We need a bit more information about 'inoperative'.
Have you downloaded and installed the latest software from the Garmin site? That might be a start.

Will not turn on

I contacted Garmin and they had me remove the microchip inside and see if that would fix the problem. It did not. So they instructed me to send it back in for repair. They gave me a return number and then ended up replacing the unit with a new one. My unit was under a year old so it was no charge.

LG Trax cell phone

You must of gotten the ROM bootloader chip wet. You can buy a cheap GoPhone from AT&T and put the SIM card from the LG into the new one and you will have your contacts on the new phone.

Do the following: 1 - Make sure you have fresh batteries in the unit and turn the unit on. 2 - Check the GPS date and Time. On the Main Menu at the bottom of the screen, you can see a date and time. If the date and time are not current, then the clock is your problem. You will have to wait for the almanac information to be updated. Details are below in a later section. 3 - Make sure your GPS is in the Normal Mode and not a demo mode. Verify other systems settings. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. Verify the following settings: GPS: normal WAAS: Enabled Language: English or your choice. Battery: Set according to your battery types. 4 - Check your GPSs Version Software. Go to the main menu and click on Setup icon. From the Setup screen, access the System screen icon. From the System screen, access the sub-menu icon in the upper right bar. Select "Software Version" from the list. Verify the actual software version for me. The latest version available for the eTrex Legend is version 3.90 dated March 2008. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=711 Update the unit using this latest software and using Garmin's Webupdater. http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp If that won't work, use the following download page to access the latest software updates per units. http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp 5 - Resetting your GPS clock and almanac information Next you may need to acclimate your unit to a new date and time (almanac information). If you had your unit off and without batteries for over a month since you last accessed satellites, then your clock and almanac information may be incorrect. Even Garmin acknowledges this problem after software updates and the problem with accessing satellites. They state: "unit data including alamanac information may be incorrect or cleared. Back up all user data before upgrading. After installation is complete, place unit with a clear view of the sky for 15-30 minutes to re-acquire almanac data. " I know of no way to reset the clock using the GPS menus. All I can suggest is that you do the following: A - turn the unit on and wait 5 minutes or so for the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen to appear. See page 7 of the owner's manual. B - Set the "new location" to your area using the map when the "poor satellite reception screen" appears. Be sure to use the "map" option and not the "automatic". C - Set the GPS outside with a clear view of the sky. Check on it every 10 minutes. When the "Poor Satellite Reception" screen appears again, then click on "Restart Search". The "Restart Search" option is used when the date provided in the GPS is not today's date. (See page 7 of the Owner's manual for an example) Legend Owners Manual: http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/eTrexLegend_OwnersManual.pdf D - Once the GPS can track 4 satellites, then the clock should reset and you should be fine. This process could take up to an hour. I have had this problem with my eTrex Vista and eTrex Legend (both backup GPSs) and resolved it by having the clock reset. In fact, I just tried my eTrex Legend today after not using it for many months and storing it without batteries and it had this same problem. I followed the steps above to fix the problem. This took about 35 minutes.
