Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool DU810SWLQ0 that will not drain. I've pulled the unit out, snaked the drain tube, pulled the motor/pump, and pipe assemblies, and cleaned the food trap, which I also removed. I've run the dishwasher with a bit of bleach, and the water will pump in, get processed by the agitator, and be heated. When the rinse cycle comes, dishes get covered in food, and are never clean. Waste water was being used for a clean rinse. I've run the dishwasher with the drain dangling in a bucket, and observed no flow. The motor is a dual polarity motor, and it actuates in wash and rinse cycles. I also replaced a diaphram in the waste pump assembly, since the old one was out of shape and blackened. The only other odd thing I noticed was after I yanked open the front door in the rinse cycle. A bubbling trickle of water was coming from the center of the dishwasher by the agitator head, which usually has flow only during the wash cycle to my understanding.

cmmiuser responded quickly, and with the correct answer. I believe my initial problem was the diaphragm, which I replaced, but I had reassembled the parts for the drain trap incorrectly. cmmiuser's response addressed this specifically. Problem resolved!

Refer the wash system assembly dwg. Check if the ball (item 21) is sitting correctly. If it is out of alignment that could cause the problems you are having.

Washer will spin to dry but water comes back after short time

how far down is the drain hose pushed in to the drain pipe?should only be like 3 to 4 inches, also the drain hose should be up higher than the water level in the tub.if you can pull out the drain hose try this, fill up the washer on small, after it fills, pull the hose out of the pipe and then stick the hose a few inches into the drain pipe and then turn the timer to the spin cycle and let it drain, after it stops, pull the drain hose out of the pipe,if no water enters back into washer you know that it has something to do with the way the drain hose is in the pipe or another problem.if you're saying that the drain hose is sealed to the drain pipe in the wall you will have to get in there and separate it,pull out the hose and check it,it sounds like this is where the problem is,you had the pump changed and i don't know why the guy would do this if the washer was draining so you know that's not the problem and if they changed the water valve on the washer you know water isn't leaking into the washer from the valve so i would check the drain hose.hope this helps

Water sprays out and runs on floor during final spin cycle.

Sounds like a clog, either the drain tube, drain hose, or drain pump/diverter valve.
  1. If your drain hose is connected to a drain tube/pipe, it's possible there's a clog in the plumbing somewhere. Running a snake through the drain tube should fix this
  2. Disconnect the drain hose and look for a blockage. Sometimes lint, or paper will become lodged inside the hose and water will back up
  3. The drain pump/diverter valve is a common place for a backup to occur. To inspect the drain pump, unplug the machine and disconnect the drain hose from the drain tube. Put down a blanket or towel and tilt the machine forward. At the bottom of the machine you will see the drain pump with a hose connected by a clamp. Using pliers, disconnect the clamp. There may also be a mounting screw holding the drain pump in place. Unscrew the mounting screw. Now the pump should pull away freely. Using a small flathead screwdriver or tweezers or even needlenose pliers, you should be able to dig out any obstruction. Typically paper that has fallen out of pockets will get stuck in the drain pump forcing water in the other direction, causing it to spill out onto the floor.
Below is a helpful video to both check and remove a drain pump / diverter valve.

A loud noise from the pipe that connects the dishwasher under the sink. Would that be a problem with the machine??

When the solenoid turn on to let water into the dishwasher and when it turns back off it can cause the pipe to jump. I will assume that it is banging into something. If so over time it could create a hole in the pipe or tube. I'd try and figure out what it is hitting and move one or the other things.

FL code on a Kenmore Calypso top loader

The FL error code means:
Flood Condition:
FL flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lack condition in order for FL to be displayed

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time-out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit.

Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

This problem I see on these are the water pumps getting clogged with lint or other things, causing the pump not to pump all of the water out at times.

There is a check "valve" in the drain assembly that seems to sometimes cause problems with the FL error code. You can remove this piece, and might avoid changing the pump.

FL Code on whirlpool calypso

Flood Condition - overfill; excess water in the tub. With this condition the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no timeout. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is disconnected from the unit.

May be a sign of a pump motor problem - clog, jam or failure. There is a redesigned single piece pump/impeller assembly that you should upgrade to if the unit doesn't already have that kind, if it turns out the pump has failed.

You may be able to clear the fault by removing debris from the pump water tubes or impeller. I've had to disassemble from the bottom of an unplugged unit to get a draw string out of the impeller, or a sock out of the ball valve which reverses the flow of water when the pump changes direction.

Takes a little practice, but it can save big on repair bills if you are comfortable poking around underneath a drained washer. Problem is, when you have a FL condition, you may have to bail out the water or use a wet/dry vac to **** it out of the drain tube, to avoid a mess in the wash room.
