Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

I have a X595 John Deere Lawn Tractor. My voltage runs up to 21 volts and has burned out the lights and fried the ignition switch and harness with relays. I replaced the ignition harness and switch but it still has high voltage. Where is the regulator located? Is it in the alternator? Thanks.

It might be on the inside rail of your steering sector.remove left side air screen, look at colum brace/frame that holds your dash and reach to the inside of frame for the regulator. This is where they would be on the gas models.

John Deere 2010 utility tractor, lights come on dash board, but it wont start. Its in neutral, PTO is okay, seat switch okay

1) Battery condition and clean cable connections
2) Check the voltage & connections at the solenoid
*Is full battery voltage found at the solenoid?
3) Does the small wire that activates the solenoid from the ignition switch/safety switches have voltage when the key is in the start position

a) voltage yes, but it does not start; suspect solenoid
b) voltage no, inspect and check all safety switches for voltage to and from each switch
c) safety switches do NOT have voltage to them: inspect connections on ignition switch and check for voltage coming into the switch from the battery.

I have a John Deere 317 tractor that does not start. The engine turns but does not fire. The plugs and points are good. I do not get a spark at the points or plug. What should I check next next.

We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020" and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or - ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

Will a b model run on when you remove the battery or should it. having problems wring a new anmeter up it keeps on frying it

The only reason an ampmeter shiuld fry is you are attaching the 2 leads in parralel with the battery, an ampmeter should be hooked up in series with the battery circuit. T correct wiring should be form the positive post of the battery to the positive post of the ampmeter from the negative post of the ampmeter to the ignition off-on switch, from there out to all areas of the tractor that require power such as ignitin coil (Distribiter), generater (alternater), light switch, etc.. Thus when you turn the ignition switch on the ampmeter reads all the power running thru it to the working parts of the tractor. Hope this helps, Don.

Check the brown wire feeding your voltage regulator, its between batt and steering wheel behind left side of frame.LX100 series machines had a problem with brown wire not fully contacting terminal in regulator. You will know you had bad contact if plastic is discolored.
