My Dell XPS L502 laptop keyboard locks up?

Buy a can of compressed air and spray it on the keyboard if your keys are sticking together. This is the easiest thing you can do to fix the keys on your keyboard. It doesn't work for all problems, but it's a good place to start. Make sure you get the air down inside the keys to clean out any debris, hair or food that may have gotten caught in there.

Replace the inside of the keyboard with a new piece. One of the major problems with Dell keyboards is that the plastic pieces holding the keys in place become loose or broken. You can find a cheap keyboard from Wal-Mart or an electronics store. Simply take apart the new keyboard, pull the keys off your keyboard, lay the plastic piece on top and replace your keys.

3Use a small dab of super glue to replace keys that have fallen off. Dell laptops often have keys that fall off, especially as the computer ages or is used quite frequently. Place a small dab of glue directly on the round part that holds the key in place and lightly press the key down. When the glue dries, you'll be able to use your laptop again.

Remove any problem keys from your keyboard and look at the plastic retainers. At times these retainers can become broken, damaged or simply fall off. Carefully pull off the retainer, clean it off with some compressed air and snap it back into place. Then put the key back into the slot and everything should work fine.

Consult the Dell manuals website to get information on your specific laptop computer. The manual will include information on troubleshooting and repairing any problems with your laptop. If you find that none of their suggestions work, you can also use the website to find the customer service number. You'll need to call the number and ask for help or advice.

Replace DELL Laptop Keyboard Key

Sometimes with Dell laptops, the keys on the keyboard gets stuck or damaged or fells off the keyboard. There are many different ways to repair your broken keys. Just put your mind to it and you will be able to repair it yourself.

You can place an order to replace your broken key or you can repair it you have all the parts intact.

You should have a key cap, 2 or more retainer clips (plastic pieces), which goes under the key cap.

Following is the installation guide to replace and repair Dell laptop key.

To install your key on your laptop keyboard, start out by observing your metal plates on the keyboard.

Always be sure to look at the metal keys because they differ in every keyboard. The larger metal hooks can be at the top, bottom, right or left side. The position of the metal hooks determines the position of plastic pieces.

Here you can see that it has one large metal hook at the top and two metal hooks at the bottom.

Take the larger plastic piece and observe that it has two larger sticks at the bottom, two holes at the middle and two shorter sticks at the top. The bottom sticks are going to go into the bottom metal hooks. The smooth part faces away from the keyboard.

Take the smaller plastic piece and observe that it has a small bar at the bottom, two sticks at the top and two sticks at the middle. The sticks in the middle are going to go into the middle holes of the larger piece and the bar is going to click on to the top metal hook. The smooth part faces away from the keyboard.

Place the smaller piece on the larger piece and insert its sticks to the holes of larger piece.

Push it evenly to insert completely. Get a thin object or blade and stretch the plastic pieces upwards so that it clicks together.

Take your letter key, put it in the middle and push down evenly from all four sides.

You’ve just repaired your Dell laptop keyboard.

Relocate the popped-off keytop and place it back over the correct location. Press down very hard until it locks itself back on.

My baby pulled the caps lock key off the lap top can i fix this at home

These require VERY careful technique to re-install the keytops.

USUALLY they sit on top of a little "scissor" arrangement that have tiny plastic parts. Getting the little pivots back in place can be tricky and it can be easy to break the parts. You should be able to find somebody that can do it for you.

Left shift key wont go back on

Given that replacement keyboards are not all that horrendously expensive you could actually replace the keyboard if it comes to it eventually.

However, what we did in the old days when replacing keys with worn out lettering was hold a soldering iron on the metal finger the keytop attaches to until the metal of the finger is very hot. Hot enough to push the keytop back on. While you push the keytop down onto the metal finger hold and press firmly for about 1 minute and then release. That should meld the two together if its going to happen at all. Leave it untouched for at least 30 minutes to ensure a firm bond.

This doesn't mean this will be an end all solution to your problem.

Because you mention the broken plastic piece, this mean this keytop may come loose or off again at some time in the future.

If you have tried and used super glue already be prepared for a smoke stench that will come off while you hold the soldering iron on the key finger. Burning super glue is how CSI techs reveal finger prints. That doesn't mean its very safe to breath. So, take some ventilation precautions while you do this. Essentially, do not breath the smoke directly, it will rise quicly on its own until its burned off.

Best of luck,
