Zwhiteeagle,

This is a classic reddy heat problem. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4258201-fix_gas_reddy_heaters_will_not_continue which explains the problem, tells you where to get parts and how to repair your unit.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating!!

My reddy heater comes on and burns perfectly for up to 30 minutes then it shuts off and blows smoke for a couple of seconds before it completely shuts down.

This doesn't help. There at least 4 60k Reddy Heaters models -some are spark plug heaters, some have the new Hot Surface Ignitor technology. All heaters have specific model. Without you knowing the model I can't help, sorry.

Heater shuts down prematurly

If the heater runs fine for the 15 or so minutes without smoke/odor- do this
  1. check for water droplets on bottom of tank
  2. check for restricted fuel filter
  3. test photocell
  4. test safety control (reset)
You don't state whether this is a spark plug heater *or* Hot Surface Ignitor type. I made the assumption you were inquirung about a Spark Plug Heater. Disregard the list if the heater is an HSI type---- troubleshooting is different.

My best guess is that you are are connecting to your AC receptacle with an extention cord that is too small. The Reddy Heater contains a computer that will shut the unit off if it cannot pull enough amps from your service. The longer the cord the higher the loss from receptacle to unit. This loss can be reduced by increasing the size of your extention cord. I run a 100' 10/2 cord.

Hope this helps!
