Question about Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive

External Hard Drive No Longer Recognized

Two months ago I bout a 500 gig Western Digital My Book Home Edition external hard drive. I had been using it successfully with my PowerBook G4 laptop until this morning. I had unplugged the hard drive from my laptop while I went to school on Friday (I'm a teacher), which I've done many times, but when I plugged the external hard drive back into the laptop this morning my laptop would not recognize the hard drive. I think that the external hard drive is getting power - it's making a whirring noise, like it does when it's working normally - but the light on the front of the external hard drive will not light up, and my laptop does not recognize it. I've tried the external hard drive with another computer and it also did not recognize it.

Any ideas? Thank you so much for any help!

The WD 500 gig book worked well for about 1 year then one day poof, my computer won’t recognize my hard drive, but it does in the system manager it shows it’s there, but when I try to propagate the drive it doesn’t read it, it says no sectors?? I tried all the stuff, different ports, diff computer, bios, taking the disk apart and connecting it to the computer by direct cable but the computer won’t go past the boot verification and reboots. So I’m stumped? It must be the GD hard drive and the crappy components. Does anyone else have an answer? I’m thinking of finding a replacement for the control board or the usb control board and see if this will boot it up, but to find these components are hard, so maybe I will go by anew one just like it and replace both control boards and put the bad boards in the new one and return it..HEHEHAHA.

Hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.

Problem with WD 1.5TB external hard drive

This appears to be a common occurrence with the My Book. It may be a heat dissipation problem from leaving the unit on for longer than it takes to back up your data.

I think you might need technical support from Western Digital. Do you have an alternate backup?

Hi there, my Western Digital External 500 GB hard drive wont get recognised - it is blinking rapidly and it was working fine a minute ago - no physical shocks etc

Try to connect to another usb slot or try on another comp if you can,if it still won't work then your HDD has hardware problem which can be solved only by a WD service.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.

My WESTERN DIGITAL EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE 500 GB is not getting recognized in 'MY COMPUTER". I want the data to be recovered. Please Help

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

Death of a drive

That sounds like a head crash. You should take to a service center and get it fixed and/or inspected.
