Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Dell PC with a Soundmax digital sound card and I'm trying to use Google's new g-mail phone service, but I'm having problems configuring the sound card. I can call out and my external mic works, but not on the computer phone call.

I'm trying to use Google's new phone call option, but my voice isn't coming thru. I have an external mic plugged into the mic-in jack and headphones plugged into the headphone jack. I checked the mic properties and it shows the mic working. I can't find Google's voice and chat plug-in in order to check for mic muting there. Google's talk plug-in is listed in the control panel programs but not in the list of programs on the desktop under all programs and I don't know how to access it in order to check mic muting there.

I guess the issue is when you want to call using a direct mic on the computer ..(I believe you attached a headphones...right ??cause the computer do not have a microphone unless it is a laptop with a internal mic..)
If you have the microphone attached..than all you have to do is to double click on the speaker icon in the tasc bar-s tray system (the icons in the right ) ..and a volume controla manager page will appear there look for the mic..and see not to be muted if yo fin it ..if there isnt present the options ..and properties..and from the list tick the case for the mic in and add it in the volumes page ..after that see not to be muted..and raze the volume ..and should be working ..
also check it by making a mic check into the preferences (options) of the software you use to
Another issue is to open the sound max..manager ..and look for speaker configuration ..and in there look for the correct plug for the ..cause its position might be changed..or the wiring can be faulty ..and if you never used a mic..try to see if any position will work ..(change the inlet ) ..
if you are using the front panel lets ..take in consideration that they may be try the back pink for the mic in case it seams not to be working ..
If you have a surround %=1 configuration made for your speakers..(3 out lets in the back ..) and you only have a 3 outlets sound card ..than change it to 2 stereo from the speaker configuration of the sound-max manager ...cause this settings cuts out the mic function to use the plug for the 3rd out...

Look for it in the start ..all programs ..and if you installed it has to be there ..unless you never installed the software ..and you just used an on line version ..
for to be sure ...just run the installer again ..and it will put a desktop icon too..after that open it ..log on ...and check preferences and options under the program ..
By the way ..check the mic cause it has a switch on it too ..and it might be off..(some of them have ) ..
Here is a link for Google Talk ..
it also have a video call plug in there ..if you install it it will allow to make video calls as well..

Dell 8400 - no sound from speakers? Worked in the past.

Should have the hardware driver "soundmax integrated digital audio" Check in device manager and make sure that is what is says under sound, video, and game controllers. If not then you need a audio driver. Go to and put in your service tag and down load the audio.

Another tip is trying to plug your speakers into the front headphone jack. if they work it might be a bad jack in the back.

Make sure the speakers are good and getting power. You can try them on a nother computer or even mp3 player.

Can't configure audio on my new Asus P5QL motherboard

There should've been something on your ASUS CD that included the SoundMax driver. Without that you won't get audio. You might need to reinstall your CD again making sure you have installed the Soundmax driver. If you can't find it, look for Soundmax on the Internet. If the Soundmax card is properly installed you will see a little blue square on your bottom right task bar. If you click on the little arrow, you can adjust the sound volume. It also contains a wizard to help you diagnose problems.

Oh, you will need to make sure your virus programs are turned off before installing that program as well.

Re: inadvertently uninstalled audio on dell lattitude 800

First I'd try to install the latest driver:
1. Go to
2. Click on "Drivers and Downloads"
3. Your best option is by using the service tag code (usually on the bottom of the laptop), but if you can't locate it, use the select by model option.
4. Click the plus next to Audio
5. Download the newest driver and install.
6. After installation, reboot and see if it worked.
