Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore Elite HE4T wsher and this morning I notice that there was some water in the tub. I figured it wasn't draining properly so I put in a load of laudry to see what would happen. The cycle went to the end without any error signals and when I took the clothes out all the water had been drained. About an hour later I went to go put in another load and once agian there was water in teh tub. Then I noticed that there was water dripping from the opening in the rubber that goes all the way around in the front of the tub. What could be causing this drip?

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your description you likely have a faulty inlet/water valve. Here's an easy way to confirm or dismiss whether it is the valve or not.

1) First drain the standing water which presently exists, if any.

2) Unplug the washer from the wall/power outlet and allow a period of time to pass, 12 hrs or so. If the unit has standing water in it after wards you need a valve.

If it doesn't have water in it afterwards then the valve is being energized when it is plugged in even when it should not...that indicates a faulty control unfortunately, but not very likely.

The valve varies in pricing around $40 - $75. It should be available at most brick and mortar appliance part locations or if you prefer on-line shopping try "searspartsdirect.com" "repairclinic.com" or "appliancepartspros.com" to name a few.

To swap out the valve simply follow these steps...

**Unplug the unit from the wall before attempting any repairs suggested here...safety first**

1) turn off the water and unfasten the hot & cold fill hoses going to the washer.

2) remove the three screws along the back of the top panel and then slide the top panel back slightly and pull up. The panel should lift away.

3) in the left rear corner ( when observing from the front of the washer )you should now see the valve.

4) remove the wires, carefully the harness has little release tabs which must be bent back slightly to pull the wire & harness off.

5) remove the hose to the dispenser assembly, a pair of pliers or vise-grips works well here.

6) remove the screw on the outside back wall of the washer and pull the valve out, voila !

Hope this answers your question but more importantly solves your problem.

Why is there water in the tub when off for 2 or 3 days?

Either the tub has a slow leak in the faucet or water is backing up from the drain, you need a plumber to route out the drain pipe

This problem can be caused by either a leaking water inlet valve, or a condition known as "siphoning". Since you just recently moved, I would make sure you don't have a siphoning problem, first. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r587481-prevent_washer_siphoning

Although siphoning normally refers to a constant drain problem where a washer has problems maintaining the proper water level, it can also lead to problems where the drain line will back up into the washer.

Now, if you follow the advice in the link and determine this is NOT caused by siphoning, I would suspect that you have a water inlet valve that is leaking. A tell-tale sign will be water trickling down the fill tube in the rubber door bellow. The water inlet valves have a diaphragm that is controlled by an electric solenoid. Sometimes the valve becomes clogged with sediment or deposits, causing the diaphragm not to close properly. If you live in an area that has hard water, or use well water, you may have hard water deposits or rust build up in the valve. You may be able to correct the problem by removing the valve and cleaning it with some distilled vinegar. You can remove the valve by following these steps:

1. Unplug the washer and turn off water supply at the taps.
2. Disconnect the water inlet hoses.
3. Remove washer top panel by removing the three screws that hold the panel in place in the rear of the washer. With the screws removed, the panel slides back, then off.
4. The inlet valve (this is what your water inlet hoses connect to) will be located in the left rear of the washer (facing from the front). Remove the dispenser hose(s) from the valve and the electric connections. Remember how the electrical connections are removed. They should be color coded. One is for HOT, one is for COLD.
5. Remove the mounting screws that hold the assembly in place.

Once you have the inlet valve removed, you can place it in some distilled vinegar and let it soak. Just don't submerge the electrical connections. If this does not correct your problem, replace the valve. Searspartsdirect.com and repairclinic.com are two notable web sites that I have frequently used. Just type in your complete model number to begin the parts search.

I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you require additional assistance.
