HOW TO REPLACE MULTI FUNCTION CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH IN A 1999 FORD EXPLORER

IT ALL DEPENDS IF THE SWITCH IS AT THE STEERING WHEEL OR ON THE COLUMN.

code p 0581 refers to cruise control system, multi-function input A--circuit malfunction===causes --wiring short---multi-functional switch---mechanical fault

Maybe your lo beam lights are burnt out I have seen both sides do this before. Check your fuses and switches as well.

If the switch is replaced,then it can be wiring issue or faulty cruise control board.But as the switch is replaced,get the voltage at the switch tested to confirm the switch is actually receiving voltage.If no voltage received at switch power supply wire then ,apply external 12 volt power to the cruise control switch wire and then see if cruise control comes ON.If yes,then you know wiring is issue.

What about the cruise actuator?

The multi function switch does have the dimmer switch in it, but that is only a momentary contact to toggle the relay.
But is does not have to be the relay either, it could also be fuses, since the high beams and low beams have different fuses.
It is even possible both bulbs burned out at about the same time.
Use a test light to verify before replacing anything.

Chances are that you will need to replace the Multi-Function switch. There is a common problem for Explorers to have the switch fail. A multi-function switch controls the cruise, wipers, blinkers and if even one item is not working then will still need to be replaced. Usually you can find a wiring diagram on Mitchell on Demand Do - It yourself website.

More likley you want to have the transducer or the electronic equivalent checked first. The actual lever and controls rarely malfunction. However if someone has indeed pulled the lever out, it should snap back into place with a slight inward push towards the steering column. Best of luck, Dana
