I have a similar problem. you turn the console on and after a random amount of time the unit just powers down. other symptoms i noticed on mine is that the power button has become un-responsive and any time you press the eject button (after turning it on of course) leads it to turn off instead...any thoughts?

A fan has nothing to do with the issue. In my opinion, I would definately send it for repair, to avoid future problems. The other comment is just agreeing with what you asked.

SOURCE: after playing 15 minutes two red lights flash and xbox shuts down

It's not the fan . It's ether the C.P.U and or the G.P.U. has lost
it's thermal seal with the heat sink , or the G.P.U temp feed connection has become intermittent ( disconnected) from the main
board . Recommendations are first have a shop remove and
reapplie heat sink compound . If it still over heat then a re-flow
of booth chips should remedy the problem.

Wont read disc

Hi,

This is quite a common problem with the PS3 and is caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of one or both of these lasers.

For more information on how to resolve the problem please have a look at this FixYa Tip on the subject.
