Give the hard drive a firm tap on side it sounds like a dirty hard drive the clicking sound is the reader arm scating across the platters once you get access to your hard drive then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/f which will automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive
good luck with this

That all depends on how badly the drive is broken.
If the problem is mechanical, suspect a bad connection first. Almost everything else has that as an underlying cause.

If you suspect it has been struck or dropped, there are some tricks to get it spinning long enough to recover the files. Sometimes gentle tapping or drop from an inch or so - no higher! - can loosen things up to get it spinning. Where so-called "stiction" is involved, sometimes alternately freezing and warming the drive can "un-stick" the mechanism through expansion and contraction of the moving parts.

How badly you want the files will determine whether you are willing to pay for a data recovery service.

Only if you are certain that the hardware is working correctly should you attempt to use software utilities in an attempt to repair and recover the file system, most importantly because such utilities need to write to the disk and therefore are likely to write over your files.

The simplest way would be to restore your files from your backup drive.

You can recover data from portable hard drive with data recovery software.Tenorshare data recovery is one of the bests. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, bad section, virus attack etc.Download it and scan your external hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.

Buy yourself a USB to IDE & SATA disk adapter from eBay fro a few $$$. Then open the Tosh case and unplug the drive and power supply connectors and remove it from the case - carefully. Plug it into the USB to IDE /SATA adapter and lay it flat on a non conductive surface and connect the USB to your PC should see it as a new drive. This will allow you to get the data off the drive, check for errors and reformat it. If you can’t see the drive from the PC then it is likely that the drive is fatally faulty.

My back up 160GB Rugged drive quit working, felt hotter than normal and gives off a 'burnt' cct. smell. MacBook Pro using XP pro SP3 with Firewire link. Backup size about 70GB with five years of photos....

One of the circuits in the back up drive failed. Your options are to send to to the manufacturer for possible repair or you can try removing the drive unit, that is actually what is inside that, and putting it in a portable case, available from Best Buy for about 39.99, and continue to use the device. or take it as a lose of data and get a new back up drive.
