Question about Gateway GM5664 Desktop PC

I can't record audio.

Trying to record audio streamed from the internet, or even just as I'm listening to a CD doesn't seem to be possible. I'm using whatever the onboard Realtek audio card is. But I can't get ANY sort of "what you hear" recording from any source. Doesn't seem there are any settings (at least that are easily found) to set the recording source etc. My old machine running XP with a soundblaster card had no problems. But this new one with Vista and this Realtec card are a mystery to me. Any thoughts??

Having recording software was not the problem. It turns out in Windows Vista, they *HIDE* the option to record live sound. I found a solution here to un-hide, and activate the hidden line recording source:

Thanks! Hope this helps someone else as well.

To record streaming music, you need a program that's specifically made for that. Here's one link to a company that sells such a product:
http://www.nch.com.au/soundtap/index.html

However, you might want to just search on Google for "record streaming audio". Shop around - there are some freeware products, and some that are shareware or very low priced. I just included the link so you could see what one program offers, but I haven't tried this particular program myself. I've used some freeware ones in the past, but they probably don't work with Disaster, er, I mean Vista.

Tip

Download Free Music legally,,legally

Are you scared that the RIAA is about to track you down for illegally downloading songs. Well, here is a method of obtaining many songs absolutely free that is virtually untrackable by modern technology. This has to do with capturing streaming audio, which in many cases, believe it or not are plain old mp3s just waiting for you to "download." I have found most of the current top - 40 as well as many others you may like, so keep searching. The music is waiting for you to find it.

Step 1:
First of all, you need to find a good site that hosts streaming audio. My favorite that has brought me many songs to date is hxxp://www.windowsmedia.com. Some others are just as good, but this is the site that i will be referencing (plus, I know you guys love to steal from Microsoft).

Step 2:
Alright, go up to the left hand corner where there is an empty text box. This is the search box, just fill it with songname or artist just like you would in kaaza and click search. This will bring up a page with links to many websites hosting a stream by that artist. The ones with music notes are just that...music, this is what you want. In many cases, this is all you need. Just right click on one of the links and click "save us" to save the song. This works if the file extension is .mp3 or .wma or .asf or well - other known formats. If this worked, you are finished, otherwise continue reading.

Step 3:
However, if you encounter a .asx file, there are few more steps you will have to endure. First of all, do exactly like the above example downloaded, check to see how large the file is. If it is large file in the megabyte range, then you should be able to play it in your music program. However, if it is less than1 kilobyte, open it as a textfile. You will see many script commands that communicate to windows media player. Don't worry about these, just look for some URLs which will most likely be pointing to a .asf file. It will have at least one if not more. Open the new found URL in your browser and save it like in step 2 and you should be good to go. (I use Mozilla, because Internet Explorer like to open things rather than save them as I tell it)

NOTE: If any of the URL are preceded with "mms://" instead of :http://" find another URL, because this technique will not work.

This technique is especially useful to avoid prosecution because streaming
audio, and downloading it appear the same to a web server, therefore you are seen as just another "legal" listener, so "download" away my friend and don't blame me if this soon becomes illegal (if it isn't already)

Step 4:
If you are picky then search for a program that will convert these file types to mp3. I assure you there are many sites out there.

If this technique does not work for some reason, there i8s another technique which is manually recording streaming audio, with an audio capture program. I use the one that came with my sound card (Audigy 2zs, great sound card), but I would recommend it only as a last resort such as with ":mms://" files. There is a degredation in quality compared to the other formats and it records every sound your PC makes while it is records every sound your PC makes while it is recording so don't chat on AIM while recording (lol I can hear random doors slamming now).

I listen to streaming audio while I surf the net. While listening to streaming audio, I get a "stutter", when I click a link in the window I'm surfing. Never have experienced this, even on my 10 year old...

This will usually only happen if you have so many programs running in the background that your system resources are maxed out. The processor has to momentarily stop one process to go to the link that you clicked on. Check your task manager and see what you have left for resources. You can probably go through and kill a number of background tasks without causing any issues. If you're not sure what a particular task is for type in the name on Google. There are a number of sites on the web that will tell you what pretty much all of your tasks are connected to.

If you're trying to watch streaming media on a slow internet connection, it will undoubtedly cut out.

That seems like the most logical solution given the information provided.

USED TO BE ABLE TO GET SIRIUS RADIO ON MY LAPTOP COMPUTER AT WORK...TWO MONTHS AGO ACCESS STOPPPED, ALTHOUGH MY ACCOUNT WITH SIRIUS IS IN GOOD STANDING AND WORKS FINE IN MY CAR.....HAS MY COMPANY PUT UP A...

Sounds like your company has set up a router control access rule for the IP address of the Sirius Radio Server connection. Unfortunately, there is no way around this blocking. Your company has done this to control the network traffic and to block unnecessary intranet/Internet incoming and outgoing traffic. You do not realize how much bandwidth listening to streaming music or watching streaming video consumes from usable network bandwidth. If your company pays a flat fee for Internet access each month with no traffic limit, they are just being protective of the network and potential bottlenecking of datagram packets. If your company has a limit of say 4TB of transmission packets per month and anything over this amount begins costing them oodles of money, the IT department is just trying to keep costs down. If the laptop you are using belongs to your company and is NOT your personal laptop, then more than likely the IT department HAS installed new firewall rules that are in place to protect the integrity and security of the system data. I know that you want to listen to your own music selections while at work, but network and data security trumps your ability to listen to what you want to. My suggestion, bring in some **** CD's with your favorite music and use your own CD player at your desk, then no one can restrict your music listening. If the laptop is owned by YOU, and you are using it for business use with consent of the organization, you are STILL restricted to NAC settings governed by your corporate IT/Security group. I know this is not what you really wanted to hear, but it is what it is. Cheers, Keith

Is it possible to record from an exsternal device, ie cd burner to roxio on my computer... via rc cable out to mini plug in?

I don't think it's possible to record directly to cd. You can record from an external device to your PC and then burn that file. Depending on what you're trying to do depends on what software you'll need. Sound Forge is an excellent bit of software for recording. I use it to record when I play on my record decks, but it's the industry standard and isn't cheap. I think that the latest Roxio has a 'Record Now' bit of software with it.
Basically, you want to plug your external music device's output into your PC's input. (Normally the pink socket) and then use whatever software to record the input.
Be careful with the levels. You want it peaking just on the edge of the red!!

Streaming audio/video quality can be affected by connection rate and Internet congestion. Many types of interruptions between your computer, your player, your computer's OS, your local network, your ISP and a streaming server can exist and cause trouble....
When you listen to the live audio/video stream, the sound or video skips, cuts out or buffers if the player doesn't have enough network bandwidth, it will buffer. Try increasing your player's buffering setting. Also:
  • Make sure you are choosing the appropriate bandwidth version of a media stream based on your Internet connection.
  • Make sure you are choosing the appropriate bandwidth settings in an Internet media player or streaming audio/video recorder.
  • Make sure NOT to download applications or files while watching/listening to media streams. Your Internet connection is shared between all open applications including your web-browser, your download manager and your streaming player. Closing applications that use your Internet connection simultaneously with your streaming player may reduce buffering.
  • Close other unnecessary applications that may be open on your computer. Reboot your computer. If you have lots of other programs open, they may be using too much processor time and/or RAM for the player to work properly.
  • Make sure your Internet connection is fast enough to reliably listen to streaming audio and/or watch streaming video online. High speed Internet connection is recommended.
  • Make sure your computer is fast enough. If your computer is old, it might be too slow to play an audio/video stream regardless of what else it's doing.
  • Update your media players and streaming audio/video recorders regularly.
Internet congestion can slow down the delivery of the stream, make it difficult for you to connect or cause buffering. Often the interruption is temporary. Please try to connect a few times at different times of the day, if possible. If you repeatedly have problems connecting, please notify your ISP - there are often quick fixes they can make when they learn about your issue.

Try the above steps you will find a solution to your problem....100% it will work.....

Hi, I just got a new pc HP Media Center M8430F, and I am not able to record stream audio or internet radio

I have an HP with Media Center as well.

Generally you need a software program that specifically records streaming audio and or video. A freeware program I use is OpD2d. Google it and install. Very simple to use.
