BIOS (before initial operating system). your keyboard should work before windows. if not, try using a USB keyboard

then use a port keyboard so you can access bios before windows

  • pat_hickey Sep 05, 2010

My computer is too modern and does not have a serial port for a keyboard

  • John Does Sep 06, 2010

not a serial port, a ps2 port, there are two, one for the keyboard and one for a mouse. i don't think you can even buy a serial port mouse anymore. the advantage of a port mouse is bios will pick it up immediately. once inside bios, there may be a setting to enable usb functions prior to windows (OS), then your usb keyboard will work before windows

How can i boot my dell studio from cdrom so i can reinsall from external drive?

Turn on the machine, press F12 once the Dell splash screen is displayed, the boot menu will show up. From the Boot Menu, use up-down arrow keys on the keyboard and highlight the CD/DVD/CD-RW and press Enter. You will see another menu, select "Boot from Cd-Rom" and press enter to select it. The system will boot up from the CD-Rom. Please note that this settings is only for one time boot, once the system is restarted, the boot sequence will be restored to the previous saved settings. If you wish to set it from the Bios, enter the Bios settings by hitting F2 or Delete (should be shown at the bottom of the Dell splash screen) while you see the Dell Splash Screen. In the Bios settings menu, go to Boot options and make the changes with the boot sequence.

Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

You can go to a discount store and buy a P2 keyboard for when you need to fix your computer, but an easier option is to go to an electronics store and ask them where you can find a USB to PS/2 converter, I have one on my computer that allows me to access setup before Windows loads. Hope this helps.

You can change it so you don't have to use the FN key by going into the settings while you computer is booting.

Reboot your computer
Keep hitting F2 until a greay and blue settings screen comes up
Choose the Advanced menu
Use your arrow keys to go down and select 'Function Key Behavior'
Hit enter
Select 'Function Key First'
Hit enter
Choose to Save and Exit (usually F10)

Should fix it up.

If you are hearing an intermittent beeping sound at the start of the computer, its an indication that there is a locked key, if not it can be within your Windows.Create another Profile/Account and check if the same thing happens.

Enter BIOS Setup. At the Dell logo press F12 --> BIOS/System Setup. If the same occurs then its possible that a certain key is locked. Run the 32-Bit Diagnostics (At the Dell logo press F12--> Diagnostics )a an Extended Diagnostics --> Custom Test then do the Keyboard test you can test your keyboard's keys one by one to identify which key is locked. If under Warranty, call Dell Tech support, replacing the keyboard will resolve the issue.

However, if already out of warranty, you can try using an Compressed Air Duster can and spray it to your keyboard's keys to be cleaned up.

Windows wont start. dont know how it happened.

Does F2 mean to enter setup or does F12 mean to enter setup, Press the particular key on the keyboard to enter setup and Go to Exit using your up-down keys on the keyboard (it varies with different motherboards) and go to Load Optimized Default then Yes and press F10 - Yes and it will automatically restart the system, b2.jpg if both are not displaying anything to do, restart the system and press Delete button and follow the same instructions as mentioned above. (If the BIOS screen is similar as displayed above, then just highlight the Load Optimized Default using your Up and Down Keys on the keyboard {Y for yes, Enter for OK}).. It's will boot from the hard disk as default not from the CD-rom..Good luck...

Hi my dell inspron 600m keyboard few keys are not working inculding enter key.what was the root cause

This could be an issue of a wear and tear, you could run a test on the keyboard:

1. Turn on computer
2. Tap F12
3. Select Diagnostic
4. Follow the on screen instruction (until test finished aproximately 10-15min.)
5. If prompts " do you want to run remaining memory test
6. Select " No"
7. Select Test System
8. Select Custom Test
9. Run keyboard test

If there is an error message about the keyboard it means, you need to replace it. If you are still covered by the warranty, just call dell techsupport and they will replace the keyboard. Hope this helps
