SOURCE: Viking gas burners are too hot
Yes you can but Im not qualified to tell you properly. Our gas guy came over with a long bladed slot screwdriver and lowered ours. IT CAN BE DONE!

I would be very careful in any situation where you smell gas. Do not use this range until you can be sure that unburned gas is not building up in the area.
How old is this range?
It sounds like when a burner is on, although there is gas burning, there may be some escaping unburned at or around the operating burner or burners.
