HI. This is a basic over current event that has occurred in the motor circuit and corresponding devices that are locally mounted on and near the actual motor assembly. The components near the motor assembly will be the Motor Controller and Thermal protector(mounted on he motor). If a status signal comes back from the motor controller Indicating that a current limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and display either “CA” for average current limit trip or “CI” for instantaneous current limit trip.

An average current trip occurs if there is a two second average of current draw greater than 5.55 Amps at the motor windings. This may Indicate that there are problems with the drive motor, thermal protector or motor controller. Overloading the unit may cause this problem as well and induce the CA or CI code.

The necessary actions are to run a automatic diagnostic test to isolate the problem area. The unit must be empty when starting the test. The automatic diagnostic mode will enable activation of specific machine functions without having to run a cycle. Each function test will time out in three minutes prior to initiating the next test. It is totally automatic when started. I will provide the service manual for your unit. The actual automatic diagnostic test procedure will be described on page 48 of the manual i have provided below. Simply clikc the linke below to access the manual. It will take up to 4 minutes to download the manual to your browser. Once it is fully downloaded, promptly, scroll to page 48 to begin the automatic diagnostic testing procedure.

Please report the results of the test so that I may complete my solution.

Hello. The CA code means that the average current draw at the motor winding has exceeded 5.55 amps for more than two seconds. This could mean a problem with the drive motor, the thermal protector, or the motor controller board. Overloading the washer can also cause this fault. Page 57 of the service manual gives specific tests for the drive motor and wiring harness. Start there. Here is a free link to that manual https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2c1e295a88aaaae885256c5d004632a4/$FILE/8178010.pdf

SOURCE: CA error code on Calypso Washer

CA Cl Average current limit Or Instantaneous current limit If a status signal comes back from the motor controller that a current limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and display either CA for average current limit trip or Cl for instantaneous current limit trip. Average current trip occurs if there is a 2 second average of current draw greater than 5.55 amps at the motor windings. Instantaneous current trip occurs if there is a spike of 26 amps instantly at the motor windings. This may signify problems with the drive motor, thermal protector, or motor controller. Over-loading the unit may cause this problem.

Meaning you had stuffed it full one time and then it was hard on the motor, you will have to change the drive motor most likely...

SOURCE: Kenmore elite calypro CA error code. Plus makes

The CA indicates that an average current limit on the drive motor has been exceeded (see images below). This is an extremely hard problem to diagnose and one that I've seen cause the best service techs to pull their hair out. It can be one of so many different components, and you have to catch conditions just right to have half a chance to discover which one it is.

Try removing some of the clothes; this could be caused by overloading. You could have a mechanical failure in the universal joint, wiring harness, the drive motor, central control, or the motor controller.

SOURCE: error code c1 of ca

The C1 error is displayed when the motor tries to pull more than 26 amps to run.

This indicates a problem with the motor or motor controller.

Overloading or excessive suds can also cause this error.

If you like to make a few more checks then the image below contains the instructions for entering the diagnostic test mode.

Its a short cycle that runs all of the components so the operation of each can be checked.

I hope this helps but an intermittent C1 error can be hard to pin down.

From the service manual....

"C1 = Average current limit Or Instantaneous current limit.

If a status signal comes back from the motor controller that a current
limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and
display either CA for average current limit trip or Cl for
instantaneous current limit trip.

Average current trip occurs if there is a 2 second average of current
draw greater than 5.55 amps
at the motor windings.

Instantaneous current trip occurs if there is a spike of 26 amps
instantly at the motor windings.

This may signify problems with the drive motor, thermal protector, or
motor controller. Over-loading the unit may cause this problem."

I ran a self diagnostic test on my Whirlpool calypso washer and got CA error code. Do I need to replace the drive motor?

If a status signal comes back from the motor controller that a current limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and display either CA for average current limit trip or Cl for instantaneous current limit trip.
Before replace, I would first check the power supply, wiring and electronic.
