I have a gas fireplace the product name is richelieu. (Dru) It is currently sitting on a metal plate which is on a carpet on a cement floor. We are changing the basement flooring to laminate. My question is can we put this under the fireplace with the metal plate that it is on now?

Look inside the fireplace to see the brand name on the log. Call the manufacturer. There may even be a number on the metal plate with the manufacturer's name.
cork is not a seal against gas so what he is talking about may be a retainer or bed for the gas unit. I would get a second opinion first and ask how it is done .
while it looks easy, the danger from gas is greater than electricity and that is why gas is not in the diy domain
gas affects most gaskets and requires a special material and gasket goo
be safe--- call a gas fitter
From what you have described, the problem can be related to three things: The pilot needs cleaning or the Thermocouple has failed. Or, you're not holding the gas control valve in long enough for the thermocouple to properly heat up. It usually requires at least 1 minute.
To clean the pilot all you need is a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with) to blowout the pilot tip opening.
If none of the above solves the problem, then it's definitely a failed Thermocouple. Or your particular burner may use a Thermopile or Thermogenerator. Whichever it is, they all serve the same purpose. Which is allow the gas to flow to the pilot when it's lit or stop the flow if the pilot goes out unexpectedly.
Hope this helps you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.
The gas filter is located inside the gas tank in a 2005 Santa Fe. It is part of the fuel pump assembly located in the left side of the gas tank. It can be located by removing the left rear seat, folding a panel in the carpet out of the way, and removing a small metal plate in the floor.
Turn the gas knob to the PILOT position Press down and hold whilst lighting the pilot When the flame holds on its own turn the knob to the ON position. Then turn on the wall thermostat or whatever you have to control the fireplace.
Rubber caulking is not good. You need high temperature furnace cement for this job. This is availible from Home Depot or a hardware store. Remove as much of the rubber caulking as you can first.
