I was told to reinstall sibelius 3 (student edition) due to the fact that the program is not opening. I was given the directions on how to install however, prior to reinstalling, do i also need to backup all of my sibelius files of which there are 50-60 or is this not necessary

Did you buy this software? You should have the serial number already unless you lost it.

232: Serial number - how to determine your serial number In Sibelius 3 and later, your serial number appears at the bottom of the Help > About Sibelius dialog (in the Sibelius menu on Mac OS X).
Your Sibelius serial number is also printed on the back of the case that your original Sibelius CD-ROM came in. Don't lose this CD-ROM case, as without your serial number you will have problems reinstalling or re-registering Sibelius.
If you have lost your CD-ROM case and your serial number, contact technical support in writing and ask for their assistance. In the interests of security, you may be asked for proof of purchase and identity before you can be given your serial number.

The best bet may be to call the support number and have them check into it. The serial number may not have been properly reset on their end.

You could also try disconnecting from the Internet (unplug your network cable for example) when installing the software to see if that allows you to do so. It's a long shot, but a possibility.

Make sure you're running the latest update to your version of Sibelius from
Sound and other hardware: Make sure you have updated to the latest drivers for your sound card, printer and graphics card for your operating system.

Try a system restore point prior to the date you started experiencing issues and see if the registry repair does the trick. If your Vista software has a repair facility, use it. Otherwise it is an OS issue and you may have to reload the machine from scratch using the recovery software that came with it. No software? - if so, in deep doo doo.

Have you tried using the compatibility with XP settings XP service Pack 2?

Errors on install of sibelius:

Luckily, there is a installation assistant that solves this problem! You can visit the help page here, there you can download an install assistant. Once downloaded simply run it and follow the on screen instructions.

Errors on start up of Sibelius:

If you have AVG antivirus, Google Desktop or Adobe acrobat pro installed. Then you can experience start up problems when opening sibelius.

I found that if you download updates for all three programs (or just the ones you have). Then sibelius will start up properly.

I had this problem on an Acer laptop -

I just uninstalled google desktop as i did not need it and updated avg.
