Question about Watts Onan Portable Generator - 4000 , Model# 5500

1 Answer

Onan 5500. Has spark. Has fuel. Has oil. Will start and run for a few moments after spraying starting fluid into air intake. It appears that as long as the correct mixture of starting fluid is administered it would continue to run. The problem with that process is that as you spray the fluid into the intake the mixture is to rich. As the engine continues to turn, start switch engaged, it will finely become lean enough to run for a few seconds. If you could supply the correct mixture ratio for more than a few seconds it appears it would continue to run. The Onan 5500 was running and suddenly quit. It had been started/run a few times over the week long trip when it simply stopped running and would not restart. I have read several posts and it could be the low oil sensor, the control board, or the varnish build up in the carburetor. What do you suggest beyond that if anything.

All great advise. Where is the control board located and how do you get to it? Do you know a web site URL address where the service manual can be downloaded for this Onan series BGM / H?

If it starts when you add fa fuel source to the carb throat it is not the oil level sensor. The oil level sensor and generator fault circuits all shut off the spark. You have a fuel blockage most likely in the carb float bowl caused by debris / corrosion that has made its way into the fuel jet orifice located inside the hole that the fuel bowl nut threads into into. Get some carb cleaner and shoot into the hole that the float bowl nut threads into. Make sure you dump the fuel float bowl contents. With the bowl removed use a spray can lid or something similar to check fuel flow. Fuel selector on float down you should have fuel flow. Genyly lifting the float to level the fuel flow should stop.
If you do not have any fuel flow then there is a problem with the fuel supply. Remove the fuel supply hose at the carb. Feul should flow freely. Good flow from hose = float needle problem.
No flow from hose = check fuel filter and fuel tank outlet / fuel selector for debris.

If you have checked all of the above then jumper pins 5 to 9 on the main board. You should hear the fuel pump running. If you don't hear it running then the fuel pump has probably failed.

Reconnect and re-install everything and fuel leak test before starting.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

This is about the best I can do for a free manual without refering you to a pay to download site:

    http://www.flightsystems.com/pdf/onanrvt...

Note the pin-out checks in the manual. Don't be afraid to open the power panel acess engine off.

The service manual for your generator is 965-0528 I do not have it in electronic format and was not abote to locate a freebie either. I think the manual new cost me like $18.00. It has paid for itself many times over. Every Onan 4000 owner should have one. The owners manual is useless for any thing other than routine service.

Just a note here. Your generator must have oil pressure and AC output available to run. I still think you have a fuel supply problem either from the fuel pump not running or... debris some where in the fuel system including the float bowl and orifice.

My Kia Spectra will crank but won't start

You need to first check to see if you are getting fuel and spark. Detach the air intake and spray a little starting fluid in the air intake. if it starts and runs for a moment then you likely have a bad fuel pump or fuel pump relay. if it does not start you have a spark or timing issue. if the engine turns over unusually fast you have a broken timing belt. if you have no spark, see video, you'll need to get an engine scan

Cranks over but will not start

When it cranks but won't start the problem is almost always spark or fuel. try using spray starting fluid into the air intake. If it catches even for a moment the spark is ok. concentrate on why there is no fuel. change fuel filter if it does not catch after several squirts of the starting fluid then there is no spark At this point I'd recommend letting a pro look at it.

Onan 5500 marque gold turns over but, won't start. fault code is 32 but, batteries ok, air cleaner ok, fuel pumping, oil changed, won't start

Code 32 is a low cranking speed sense. You didn't mention a Spec # which would help. You say batteries are ok, but the generator is not getting enough cranking amps or voltage to maintain the control properly. Check, battery voltage, wiring, any in line isolation solenoids, check generator solenoid, also make sure there is no mechanical binding on the generator, a good way to do that is remove the spark plugs DISCONNECT THE BATTERY to prevent starting, underneath where the air intake is under the alternator is a plastic plug, remove that and you can put a socket I believe 3/4" up onto the alternator shaft and rotate the engine, if it tuns freely there is no binding, if you feel it is hard to move, check the drive train, belts, pulleys underneath (A lot of work, best to take to a dealer if it is mechanically bound)

I have a Onan 7.5 from 1998. only 80 hours on it. Would turn over very slow and would not start. Will not turn at all now. Fuel pump and celinoid kick in. Took out starter had it tested and it was ok. What...

If you have it for 12 years, it ran only 80 hours, it may have got rusty.
If you can open generator back cover, try to see the condition of generator iron (stator and rotor).Check the bearings.
Check the oil (level and condition, it may have water or gas in it).
Take out the spark plug and without fuel try to turn the motor manually.
If you can turn it, try to clean if any rusty parts, drain the oil, clean the crankcase with cleaning oil (make a few turns)and fill it with good new oil.
Try to spray some WD 40 or some rust remover spray where you may have rust: the generator interspace, bearing legs, through the spark plug hole etc.
Thats all I can advice now. If no result try another quiary.

Our onan generator ran out of gas. we refueled but the generator will not start. i gave it a shoot of starting fluid, the generator fired and run for a second, then died. could it be a cogged fuel filter?...

No, not the filter, you will need to try to prime the carb better then with starting fluid, pour some gasoline down the carb, you may have to do this a few times, but everything will fire back up again once you get the air out of the system

Buy some starting fluid and spray some in the carb or air cleaner intake port, if the machine is flooding do not choke while using the starting fluid, make sure you do not have too much oil in the mowwer.

1995 Jeep grand cherokee, drove fine yesterday. No signs of anything wrong. Now this a.m. starter engaged and everything seemed fine, but would not ignite and turn over.

The engine needs 3 things to run: fuel, spark and compression. It is most likely either no spark or no fuel. You can check the spark by taking out one of the spark plugs and ground it out on a piece of metal on the engine. Have someone crank the engine and watch the spark plug for a blue spark. It is easier to see if it is in the shade or it is dark. One way to check to see if it is a problem with no fuel is to get a can of starting fluid. Gain access to the intake by taking out the air cleaner. Spray a shot or 2 of the starting fluid in the intake while someone cranks the engine. Don't keep spraying the starting fluid for a long time because it can wash the oil off of the cylinder walls. If the engine is getting spark but no fuel, the starting fluid will cause the engine to run for a few seconds. If it runs for any time at all then you will know that there is spark and the problem is with the fuel system. After you determine if it is a spark or fuel problem you will have to diagnose what part of the system is causing your problem.

Onan 4000 start good runs only ten minutsand shuts down, starts up

First locate the oil pressure switch and see if you can bypass it,then see if it runs. If not check the fuel filter and fuel pump, make sure solonoid for fuel pump is kicking on.
