Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a Dell Dimension 5100 Desktop and last night I shut down normally with no issues, then waited a minute and turned off the power strip. Now it will not turn on at all, no lights nothing. I have opened it up and sprayed the dust out, and there is nothing that looks to be wrong with the motherboard, no overheating signs or power scorching. Any suggestions to get this going again, or does it sound like I need a new internal power supply?

Hi Martz!

After looking at your description I have to say Yes!

  • If your machine doesn't function at all that means it is not receiving power.
  • If you were unable to hear the FAN of the power unit, then there is a greater possibility that the power unit is dead.
  • But if you see any LED indicators on in any area on the mother board that means your power unit is working well or partially.
  • So first check the power CABLE. Then the power unit. You have to check both.
  • Make sure that your Processor FAN functions well.
  • Make sure that your CMOS battery is not dead (0 charge).
Feel free to contact again if the problem persists. Please rate the answer as well!

Thanks for using Fixya!

If you ran the check list and could't solve the issue let me know and we will start diagnosis.
Before that you have to answer some questions which will help me to understand your knowledge and familiarity as well as how this problem occurred.

    Are you familiar with computers?
Are you familiar with computer hardware and electronic tools and meters?
Have you made any hardware changes prior to the problem?
How did you shut down the machine?
Does your machine require a special shutdown or does it have a special shutdown mechanism?
Do you have an alternative machine (Backup)?
How did you power up the machine?
Was there any surge or any power imbalance?
Was there a noise or a burn smell after booting up?

My dell dimension computer won't turn on. When I push in the button, it only flashes orange and then won't turn on.

Plug the computer into a power strip that has an on/off switch. Turn the power strip on. Press the computer power on button to start as normal, but after after one second turn off the power strip switch just long enough for the fans on the computer to slow down, but the amber computer led doesn't turn off and then turn the power strip switch back on. Computer should start and run fine. Computer typically can be shut down for up to 5 minutes and restarted normally--any longer and you have to sue the power strip power switch routine again

SCREEN FROZE TRIED TOREBOOT HARD DRIVE WILL NOT TURN ON

Ok well try actually turning off the computer not using the hardboot button but the wires are connected to a power strip or surge protector right? Well on those there is a switch which you can press and it stops any electricity from flowing into your computer which shuts down your comp. Also many people don't know but when you "turn of your computer" it's really on standby because when you press that button it is waiting for that to be pressed. The only way to fully shut down your computer is to stop all electricity from flowing to the computer. Hope that helped :)

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!
