Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have an LG 42" plasma tv (model: 42pc1da) and I am having a major picture problem with it. Last night, while watching the television, I heard an audible "pop" and the picture started to dim. I turned the tv off and back on to see if it would solve the problem, but now my picture is terrible. When I turn it on, I have black smears spread across the whole screen. They slowly start to fade away and after about 5 minutes, they are completely gone. However, even without the smears, the picture is off-color. The tv only shows red and green color and it seems to be swirling around inside of the tv. I opened the back to check to see if it is a capacitor issue. It doesn't seem to be. Now I have no idea where to go with repairing it.

The sound you heard came from one of the IC's under the heat sinks. Check the fuses on the left and right print, the print with the broken fuse must be replaced.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but where are these "prints" located? I don't have too much of a background in terminology

42 inch LG Plasma TV Lost Picture

Hi it sounds like it has had an elctric fault like a resistor failing.
The click you heard would be a internal switch that cuts off the elctric supply to the screen to stop furthe damage hapening.
It could even be something simple like a bad solder and in that case will need locating and resoldering.
How old is the telly and how often is it used.
When you switch it off leave it off for about an hour then try again if you have allready done this then it probably is a blown resistor are you sure nothing has been pressed on controll have you tried seeing if you can acess the menu screen via the remote and see if that comes up on the screen let me know ok

That pop was a "cap" capacitor blowing, open up the TV and look for a burn mark. And of course LG isn't going to fix or supply info for free to fix this for free, that is just good business, I would agree with them..

I have a 42 LG Plasma TV with a broken screen

NO....You must pay attention to all numbers on the back of the TV. Verify these with your tech or contact your LG customer support for the correct board numbers. If the screen was broken I doubt if you can repair this for less than it cost to replace. The screen for this one runs at about $650.00. Good Luck and good advice!

This is almost certainly the device that sends electricity to the the plasma in the panel after failing. Bring to your local repair shop and expect to pay 300-400 parts and 100-200 labour.

Cheers,
Stephen

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.
