Stuck on USB display screen

I plugged a standard USB cable into the GPS and to my laptop to see if I could access the info on the GPS (this is without a software application). The display came up on tGPS saying- USB connection made, follow instructions in software. Well there is no software, and the computer wanted me to Format F: drive. I exited. But now GPS device is stuck on the USB display screen and I cant use it. Help!

The solution is to simply unplug any devices or cables from the GPS unit. Then Power Off the unit, wait a few minutes, and Power the GPS unit back on with nothing lugged into it, including any Power cords.

This then resets the GPS's USB port to not see anything or be looking for anything and the Unit functions normally again.

MY SOLUTION THAT I PROVIDED IS FOR WHAT U HAVE STATED ABOVE "i plugged a standard USB cable into the GPS and to my laptop to see if I could access the info on the GPS (this is without a software application)." BUT IF THE PROBLEM WITH THE GPS U CAN ACTUALLY SOFT REST THE UNIT BY PRESSING THE REST BUTTON, OR POSSIBLY U CAN HARD RESET THE UNIT BY HOLDING THE POWER KEY AND THE THEN THE RESET BUTTON.

Computer doesn't recognize garmin

Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin unit. If your computer does not detect your Garmin unit, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Turn the unit off and then back on again.
Plug the USB cable into your computer.
The unit either automatically goes into USB Mass Storage Mode or displays USB Mass Storage Mode as an option on the screen.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

If you still experience problems, please contact Product Support.

Garmin nuvi 40 goes into usb mass storage mode when pluged to charge

I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable:
1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again.
Works Great!

What do I use to hook my gps to the pc, to update it

You will need a USB cable to make this connection.
Any USB generic charger will work. I used on my Garmin the Motorola cellphone USB cable.
The procedure is like this:
Connect, start Garmin Nuvi and disconnect; then reinsert the USB plug when your Nuvi model number is displayed at the bottom of the screen. You can even charge your Garmin this way. To reduce the charging time follow these steps:
# change the display brightness to less than 25%
# turn off the Garmin device.

The Tomtom XXL was unplugged from the cigarette lighter overnight. What do I do to recharge it?

The device can be run from the lighter plug without being charged first. The obvious answer is: plug in the device again; when the car is key is in and electricity switched on, it should charge again.

Most Tomtom devices also come with a standard USB cable or charge cradle with non-standard connector on device end (but USB on the other). It plugs in a PC for use with the Tomtom HOME software and also for charging.

Battery charging

If you are trying to charge the gps battery on the computer you will need a usb cable to do this. Plug the usb cable into an empty spot and then plug the other end into the gps. Also note generally the usb cable will need one standard size end and a micro usb connection on the other end. Hope this helps.

When I plug my charger in..I cannot access info..

Is the charger a genuine OEM Garmin charger? If not, I'd recommend getting one. Also, its possible that the mini-USB connector on the back of your unit is bad. Please see this link for more info on this problem.

My nuvi 260 will not display anything . It turns on okay with the Garmin introduction and then screen goes blank

Sounds like a battery problem. You may have to send to Garmin for replacement of the battery as it's not user fixable. I also highly suggest using a Garmin approved charger/ car charger if you don't have that!!
Or understand this:

  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.

I just received my Garmin for XMAS and it was working fine but now it just seemed to not charge. Then the little pic on the front shows the GPS connected to a computer desktop. HELP! Amber Fader

Does it turn on at all? Try to charge it on car adaper then, when it will turn on, try this.

The picture is displayed while it is charging through USB cable and you can't normally use GPS.
Turn the GPS on without the USB plugged in, then press the Battery symbol for about 10 seconds, until the test screen appears. Then plug in the USB.
Screen will tell you percentage of charge, and if it is charging.
***Make sure you press EXIT before unplugging the USB cable. Press EXIT, turn GPS off, then remove the cable is safest way

On the bottom you should see "USB type" if nothing is there, it may be the USB port on your computer. Try it again with a different port

Garmin Nuvi 255W

No, it may take a little longer if you are charging through the USB port. I normally have mine plugged in while driving, it charges and is in use too. To use GPS with USB. First turn the GPS on (without USB plugged in). Press Battery symbol on screen for about 10 seconds, a test screen will come on. Plug in the USB (bottom of screen shows USB connected). Tap EXIT to return to maps. You can now use it while USB is charging Make sure you turn GPS off before removing the USB cable
