Computer shutting off

I have a really annoying problem with my computer. Sometimes it will just shut off. It makes this weird sound and then shuts off. I try to turn it back on and it will get to the main screen, but then shut off again. Sometimes I'll have my computer on for 4 hours and it will turn off, sometimes less than that. I have an antivirus program that I try to run once a week, but it takes 5 hours to complete, so I can't even do this anymore because the computer shuts off before it's finished! What is wrong with my computer??
By the way, it's a Toshiba laptop that I've had for a little less than 5 years...

This seems to be a common problem with Toshiba laptops. I have seen this with many of them, and the problem is almost always overheating. Make sure your fan is working and you probably want to look into getting a notebook cooling fan (fan that plugs into usb and sits underneath the laptop).

Most modern motherboards have a "wake-up" option, i.e. wake-up, do a virus-scan, and then go back to sleep.

Restart your computer.
Enter BIOS SETUP
Look through the settings for "timed" power-on events. Change/disable it.

Check Windows Help on the computer for "System Restore". Use the information to restore your computer to a time before your problem started.

Touchpad settings reset to default after computer shuts down

What model laptop do you have?

I know some laptops come with a Power Management utility which controls various profiles. If your computer is setup with a certain profile maybe this is what is causing your computer to change settings everytime you reboot.

You may also be able to change this setting in the BIOS. Check there for any trackpad settings.

Shutdown Issues

It could be overheating, either you need to replace the fan, or at least open it up and remove any dust (bunnies) that may have built up inside, if your fan is gummed up it won't spin which then causes computer to overheat.

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

Hi Steven, in my experience as a tech support agent, it seems that you're having an issue with your hard drive, sometimes it might also be an overheating issue, to be clear on that, please be sure to check the temperature of the computer when it shuts down, then the first symptom of the issue seems to be the clicking sound which ussually comes from the hard drive's reading head, this might indicate the hard drive is damaged and that it cannot perform as usual. The steps to troubleshoot the issue will be as follows; First please enter the BIOS/ System Setup of the system, by pressing the [Delete] as soon as the computer turns on several times, you will appear in a black or blue enviroment with some information from your computer. Check if the issue will happen there as well. Second, if the computer gets really hot at the point when it shuts down, please ensure that all the fans in the computer are running (you should be able to hear them), And be sure of the temperature when it shuts down, we must know if the computer is too hot to touch, or there is no problem with it. Third step, how long will the computer stay on? Will it always shut down at the same time?
The best solution for this issue would be to replace the hard drive, or defective fans depending on the troubleshooting results, if you're still within your 1 year warranty with Toshiba, you should contact their tech support team to replace the part.

As an aditional step to the troubleshooting you should also try to remove the hard drive, and let the computer on for as long as its necessary, to discard the hard drive from the issue, if it doesn't shut down then the hard drive seems to be the problem.

I think my hard disk has broken

If its an annoying sound of a drive spinning up and then shutting down again and again, of it is accompanied by an annoying clicking sound; then the drive is definitely dead.

IBM Think Pad T22 auto -shut down a few minutes

Try running it without the battery. Sometimes an IBM battery can develop a short and cause this. If it still does it without the battery, I'm afraid it's the power management chip on the motherboard, and the motherboard will need to be replaced.

My computer won't work

most clicking sound are made by failing harddrive... check with gateway people again if it is still under warranty and ask them to replace the drive or fix it.

fyi -- if it is really the hard drive that is making the clicking noise... there is a big chance that you will loose your data
