Convergence???? We recently starting seeing "shadowing" red and green on screen. I was told to use the remote and hit mute, 1,8,3, add/erase, self focus and that should fix the problem. It didn't. The problem is worse and now there is bowing at the top and bottom. I don't know what convergence is - this is the first i've experienced with this problem - can you offer suggestions or do I need to contact a repair facility Thanks

You need to replace both convergence ICs numbers STK392-040 a repair shop will want about 600 to do the repair. Or you can get replacement ICs at the following link and they provide free step by step instructions with pictures so you can do the job yourself which takes about 45 minutes and requires just basic soldering skills. heres the link.

Needd to get into grid programming to adjust the red gun

Here are instructions on how to get into the TECH menu to adjust convergence--Understand if once you get there and red or blue are skewed and will not adjust--the convergence chips this set uses are bad.

Just look to see if it will or will not adjust.

If this information helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

With the set on press MUTE on the remote.

Then press and HOLD mute for several seconds and while still holding it on the remote press Menu on the front of the set.

A (S) should appear in the upper right corner of the screen. (It means you are in the Service mode)

Press menu again on the front of the set

7 on the remote will call up the convergence grid

3 on the remote will change the color to adjust from red to green to blue(do not adjust GREEN)

You navigate the grid with 2, 4, 6, and 8 buttons.

To stop the cursor from blinking so you can adjust at any point use the 5 button—to move again use the 5 button.

When you finish you exit by hitting 7 on the remote again.

Sometimes you have to try a few times to get into the menu—I have had my problems but once in it is easy.

How to get in convergence set up mode sony tv kp51ws500

OTHER THAN TRYING IT IN THE CUSTOMER MENU there is the tech menu.

With the set off on the original Sony remote control press:

Display, 5, Vol up and power.

The set should come on with a lot of words and numbers on screen.

With 1 OR 4 you navigate until you see PJE on the screen.

9, and then 6 on the remote will bring up the convergence grid. You will see a grid with a blinking colored cursor--if it is green do nothing--3 will allow you to change to red or blue or green. IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO CHANGE THE SET TO A UNUSED VIDEO INPUT TO MAKE IT EASY TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Select red with the three button and navigate with the 1 or 4 buttons--enter button will allow you to adjust. enter again will allow you to navigate with the 1 or 4 buttons-- you want to get to the middle of the screen and then with 1 or 4 buttons navigate from the center around the screen.

You will find 1 moves adjustment in one direction and 4 in another. Go all around and adjust red first. Then repeat with blue.

YOU ACTUALLY ADJUST USING THE CURSOR BUTTONS--WHEEL NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE REMOTE--YOU WILL SEE THE CHANGES AS YOU DO THIS.

When you are done hit Muting and then enter to save adjustments.

NOTE: some of these sets require the convergence be adjusted in the 4X3 which will also adjust in the FULL--if the set has the ZOOM AND WIDE zoom you will have to repeat the adjustment again in one of those modes to adjust Zoom and Wide Zoom.

Also if you have HD connection you may have to adjust it there also--many of these sets require it to be adjusted 3 times in the three modes.

IF convergence will not adjust in any one of the picture modes you have a convergence circuit problem and need to replace the convergence chips etc.

When you are done be sure to hit Muting and then Enter to save adjustments you have made. The word Write will appear on screen in green when you press muting and then in green when you press enter--it means you have saved the adjustments.

NEVER TRY TO ADJUST GREEN!

If you have questions or need help let me know.

IF this information has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Toshiba 57H82 convergence problems. TouchFocus

See my solution <http://www.fixya.com/support/t2795690-convergence_off_blue_line_only_vertical>.
You need to get to the service menu--it's been 4 years so go to AVSforum.com to turn off the different guns and get the better pattern.
At your risk: To get into Service mode:
1. Turn your TV on. 2. For X81 or earlier series: Press MUTE on your remote and release. 2. For H80/H81/HX81 series: Press MUTE on your remote and release two times ("Mute" on-screen) 3. Press down MUTE on your remote again and hold. While holding, press the MENU button on your TV set's front panel. 4. Release both buttons. 5. An "S" should appear on your screen. Press MENU again on your TV. 6. Now you're in service mode. Channel Up/Dn - Scrolls through Parameters and Volume Up/Dn - Changes Parameter Value
To get into convergence mode:
Get into Service mode, then Hit '7' to bring up the convergence grid. Buttons 100, 0, and ENT control which gun you want to turn off (if you want to align the red to the green without seeing the blue gun and other variations). 2=up, 8=down, 4=left, 6=right, 3=change gun to converge, 5=converge that point. To exit convergence mode you press 7 once and your screen should look like it's imploding then return to normal and then you press 7 to get back into regular service mode.
I have more info found on the board. -Ken

PT-53wx53g Convergence issue?

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence settings

Key Functions
7,8,9 = select R, G or B
+100,0,PRE-CH = mute R, G or B
INFO = test/normal
4 = shifts from point to line, grid move
2 = restore factory
SOURCE = H/V select
ADD/DEL = Save
S.MODE = exit
MUTE = cursor forward
P.MODE = cursor back
Volume +/- = moves convergence left or right
Channel +/- = moves convergence up or down
1 = zero's all convergence settings (ugly!)
U/D/L/R = move cursor
SELF FOCUS = saves the convergence adjustment - do before exiting

Good luck.  I let a sub-standard service joint work on mine - they replaced the OEM chips with a higher wattage equivalent, and I've had nothing but problems ever since.
