It could be the bobbin if you put it in the bobbincase upside down and its turning the wrong way. When its in the bobbincase and you pull the thread while looking at the bobbin, the bobbin should turn clockwise. If its turning counter clockwise flip the bobbin over.
It could just be the top isn't threaded right also.
Or maybe there is a burr on the hook that grabs the thread as it goes around. The burr would catch the thread and foul everything up.
There are a few reasons for what you described.

The bobbin thread is too tight it's either getting caught on something or tension of bobbin needs adjusted

Thread bunching and bobbin winder quit

This sounds a lot like you've forgotten to lower the presser foot. (this leaves the tension discs open and causes serious issues below the material.) Double check that and if still having issues post again.

When attempting to sew the bottom of fabric "thread starts bunching up after about 3 stitches....Help....what is wrong

you might try checking your needle to see if it's bent-roll on flat surface to see if it roll correctly
or blunt or damaged
some sewing machines bunch up like that when the thread come off the thread take up lever
also check the top tension
check for lint or loose thread in the bobbin area
check to make sure the bobbin is wound correctly

Thread bunchingup on bottom of material on singer

Hello,
Here are some solutions to try.

* Re-thread your machine
It may be threaded incorrectly.

* Raise your feed dogs If your machine has this feature.

* When you start to sew a seam, hold the upper and bobbin thread tails back and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting caught in your machine.

I hope this helps.

My new sewing machine, just opened to use, is bunching thread on the underneath or bobbin side when I attempt to straight stitch. What is causing this to happen. Thanks.

re thread the top and bobbin threads

after pulling up the bobbin thread pull both threads to the back and hol them when stitching the first few stitches

with out holing the threads the machine will pull the thread into the machine and bunch the thread

Thread bunches up from bobbin feed.

Remove the needle plate and clean the feed dogs there could be fluff gathering.
Check your needle is not damaged.

Thread bunching

There is two other potential problems other than the stitch length. I have this model and if the bobbin is not the exat right one, then it will bunch. I have also seen it happen when the tension is too loose.
