I bought a Nexxtech 175 watt inverter to power my laptop. It worked fine in my truck in the store parking lot but won't work in my tractor where I really need it. It works from the power point or the...

It could be any of a number of things, but the first 2 guesses I am going to make are:
1) The contacts in the cigarette lighter jack in the tractor are corroded; or
2) the wires that power the cigarette lighter jack in the tractor are too small of a gauge to provide enough current flow without a voltage drop. This one can be tested by popping the cigarette lighter jack out of the dashboard while still wired (carefully, you don't want to cause a short-circuit), and then plugging in the inverter and measuring the voltage with a multimeter going INTO the lighter jack. It should be at least 11.5, preferably 12, Volts. Test both before and after the inverter is plugged in. If the after reading drops too much, then you know you need a bigger gauge wire feeding the lighter jack.

I plugged in an inverter to my cigarette lighter, the inverter didn't work. Then the cigarette lighter stopped working and soon after that the in dash navigation/entertainment system stopped working. I...

The inverter caused a short circuit , the insulation on the lighter socket is earthed out or a cable is burnt and earthed out , disconnect the lighter cable, and check if shorted , if not work back to the ignition switch till you find it.

I have just purchased a Mazda 3 sport 2010 and do not have a cigarette lighter. Should I have one? Also what tools should be in the boot? It is a 1.6 model.

whilst you may have a socket for power,as nobody smokes anymore, they dont fit cigar far as tools are concerned, a jack with handle and a 10mm wrench and possiblly a double ended screwdriver is all you should get.remember for all those who fix there own cars there is one who will sue, cos "they should have given instructions on how to use the tools".(bloody idiots)

I bought at Garmin Nuvi 1300 GPS for my daughter for Christmas. She just tried to use it for the first time yesterday and it doesn't fit the cigarette lighter. What can we do now???

It's strange if the plug doesn't fit the cigarette lighter socket. They can be a tight fit so if you find it a little big for the socket try putting pressure on it to push it in. If it absolutely won't fit you can buy cigarette lighter plugs in car accessory shops. If you can get one that does fit you can cut the one that's on the lead off and fit the new one.

If you cannot get any plug to fit you can get the lead wired permanently into the car. Any garage would be able to do it for you.

Is the cigarette lighter also the plug for cell phone charger?

The cigarette lighter plug should also work for the phone charger as long as the phone charger uses the cigarette lighter style plug(long with two metal contacts on the sides and a button contact on the tip). Most standard car chargers will fit both cigarette and auxillary style plugs.

Overloaded my inverter -now only works when hooked to car battery

It sounds like the fuse that protects you cigarette lighter is blown.

After you have replaced the fuse, check the voltage again. 0.015vdc would not have powered anything that in manufactured to operate on 12vdc.

When powering anything over about 250W, I would suggest connecting directly to the battery to avoid overloading the lighter circuit.
