One possibility is that the power cord attaching the power adapter to the DC jack in the laptop might be broken or damaged. Inspect it visually to verify this possibility.
Also, try measuring the DC output from the power adapter's outlet to make sure it is providing the correct output voltage needed to run the laptop (if at all).
Another possibility is that the DC jack where the power adapter connects to the laptop might be either loose or damaged, & needs to be either re-soldered or replaced. However, in order to do this, you will need to disassemble the laptop & get the motherboard out.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

SOURCE: AC adapter not recognized

The AC adapter has a small wire in the center of the connector to the system. This sensing wire, if bent or broken will cause the error you mention.

Check the inside of the connector, since it is new, you can call Dell 800-624-9896 for a replacement adapter.

SOURCE: AC adapter not recognized

If you don't get any errors when you startup on battery then all you have to do is call Dell. Get work order number and send them the laptop and adapter. They are very fast. I sent a laptop to them last month and I had it back in 3 days! I was surprised.

SOURCE: have a dell inspiron with

From doing a google search for "AC Adapter Cannot Be Determined" it appears your power adapter is defective and/or the output voltage is not up to full voltage. From the many posts about this that I find doing the google search it's a fairly common problem. If it's still under warranty contact Dell Support. If not, you'd better buy one replacement. There are tons of online stores selling this.

Can you take your battery out and turn on just with the adapter plugged in? Works? The adapter is ok.
Windows is not recognizing your battery so it can not charge it. Remove the power again, put the battery back in again and notice if it is loose or not a good fit.

Ask the service center to test your system with a different battery as they do wear out!
Samr thing with a different battery, the charging curcuit and connection from the battery system to the motherboard may have gone out or received damage from a short curcuit or power problem... in this case they may be correct about the motherboard.

If the system is still under grarantee, let them do the work... if not, continue to use the machine without a battery, only connected to wall power... till something else goes wrong. The repair may be more expensive than a newer model.

Dell Inspiron 1420 switch off while on at Internet site and it will not start up again when pressing the on button.

you can first try to connect your laptop to an AC power source via the ac adapter, if it fails to charge the battery, then it must be your battery died. try a relacement dell inspiron 1420 battery, which usually lasts longer and is compatibale with your dell and costs much less than the original one!

The adapter could be faulty or has failed slightly and is below the operating limits. This means you probably need to replace the power adapter.

My dell inspiron 1420 dont charge. the indicator in the taskbar does not indicate that it is charging if it is plugged in

Either you got a faulty AC adapter or there is a problem with the DC power section of the Inspiron (or maybe the DC jack). Usually it's the adapter. You can check it with any commercial multimeter: it should give you 19V with internal positive. If it's broken, most Dell use the same adapter and it's easy to find cheap deals on eBay, for example.

Unfortunately, if it does work, and yet the notebook is NOT working if you take out the battery and plug the AC adapter only, you'll probably have to call Dell tech support.

I had the battery not recognized on boot up. then

the Dell AC adapter has a sensing pin so the bios can determine the wattage of the adapter. If the system cannot ID the adapter, the battery charger circuit is disabled. You'll need a functional DELL ac adapter to get the battery to charge
