Yes, swapped out the 2 512 MB for 2 1 GB cards. Nothing. Also, installed the hard drive into another Dell and it's working fine.

Hi; thanks for responding. Yes, I changed the motherboard with a refurnished one from TXcess Surplus. I have since contacted them to swap out the one I installed and have received a replacement. I plan to install to see if this corrects the problem. Is there a way to check the video card/thermal cooling assembly?

    Thanks,

    Robert

Replaced the battery several month ago and changed motherboard again today, The 3 green lights indication previously has now changed to a one "A" green light remaining on much longer than the 3 green lights. Also, with the power supply plugged in the battery status light is blinking periodically.

    Thanks,

    Robert

Ok, should I work on replacing just the graphics card or the thermal cooling attached as well? You should know I swapped out the motherboard today. Previously only 3 green lights for maybe 5 seconds. Now one green light "A" but staying on much longer maybe 10-12 seconds before shutting off. Also, the computer now is giving an indication of the battery being charged by the power supply. Looking up, maybe?

    Thanks again,

    Robert

Try installing new ram. bad ram is a constant reason for computers not to boot up. you cant have video with out it. i have worked on quite a few pc's that wouldnt boot and this was what was causing them not to.

Would you mind if I ask you for a clarification? I am a little confused when you say 'changed out motherboard and ..." Do you mean, you've changed the motherboard?

Referring to your condition and the light, I would suspect Graphic card (video module).

Awaiting.

Hi! Have you tried swapping the memory card? This can be a memory card issue.

My dell xps won`t stay on

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

The indications are of a NO POST. This can be caused by:
  1. Failed motherboard
  2. Failed Front IO Panel
  3. Damaged IO Panel Cable
If issues connecting USB connections occurred via the front connection, I'd suspect the IO panel as the issue. If the IO panel doesn't resolve, then motherboard is likely failure point.

it is because your nvidia card was broken, it makes the windows won't boot up, try to clean up your nvdia card (yellow circuit which will connect to the pci of the mother board) using a pencil eraser

i suggest you to change your nvdia card with a new one
