The short answer is that YOU should NOT try to fix it;
instead, take the computer to a qualified technician,
who knows how to safely & correctly disassemble the computer,
and to repair the broken socket, or, if necessary, to replace the entire motherboard, reassemble, and test.

I'm trying to remove the DC Jack from ASUS 1005 HA board so I can replace it. What steps need to be taken besides the obvious solder points? Thanks!

If you have not opend up your laptop yet do your self a favor.I tried this once and it can be nothing but a headache.First thing that happened was I opened it to far and broke a tiny cable by pulling the cable end off.Turned out that an inch was the most I could open it.Talk to a technician first to find out if there are any little things to worry about.The laptop I had my adventure with was an Acer.I did manage to fix my HP that I broke the CMOS battery holder because of a cold solder joint but that was easy to get at.Thanks for choosing FixYa.com and good luck!

I own an Acer Aspire One D250. My kids try to force the wrong ac adapter into the power outlet and it wouldn't accept a charge. Because we own two, I was able to switch out the battery and the computer...

Depends on what damage was caused. If the dc connector broke off cleanly and did not crack the board or caused any other damage, yiou can get a cheap dc socket from ebay from about £3.50, fitting it may cost a little more. I'd get it done by a reliable technician, unless you are handy with a soldering iron.

What worries me a little is the fact it will not boot with the battery, could just be down to the dc jack, but given the fact the kids pushed the wrong adaptor in the socket, it may have caused damage to the charging circuit

I have an acer aspire one 8.9" running windows xp.

There are two wires of importance - the red and the black, positive and negative respectively. Pay attention to how the adapter plug outputs power to the jack - they should have a label that indicates whether the the inner or outer connections are positive or negative. Make sure the jack is wired accordingly to the adapters's plug - positive goes to positive and negative goes to negative. Use a voltmeter to verify the voltage and polarity of the plug.

DC power input center pin is gone

Part costs about $ 5-10 bucks.....labor to fix it ranges from $ 100 - $250. Problem is caused by jerking or tugging on the power cable too much. All laptops need a Cable Retention Device like the one in this video. . .
